Project Description:


The typical hay making process is quite labor intensive and involves two or three steps to cut, windrow, and bale
the hay
.
This project’s goal will be to utilize ma
chine vision to help guide and steer the equipment thus freeing
up the operator’s attention for monitoring other details
.
GPS input may

be used to augment the machine vision
system that will (1) guide the tractor/swather
/windrower

when the hay is cut, (2)
guide the rake when the hay is
turned over or
windrowed, and (3) guide the baler.

Some of the challenges of this project are to (1) select a
sensor(s) that can detect where the edge of the crop is, (2) develop the algorithms to filter and combine the
mult
iple inputs, and (3) integrate the sensory data into the steering system of the tractor/swather.

System will be
designed
and tested on a tractor/swather

that is made available by Raven Industries. Raven
will provide (1) up to $5000 for purchase of parts or machining that may be required and (2)
up to two

hours

per week of technical support
. Due to the proprietary nature of the equipment, students who work on
this project must be employees of Raven and will be paid for up to 10 hours per week of time on the
project. Any intellectual property that is developed
on this project becomes the property of Raven
Industries. If a patent application

in the name of the students

is filed as an outcome of this project, Raven
will compensate the team members $500/person up to a maximum of $2000 total.
