NetWare Autodownload Utility for InoculateIT for NetWare

Welcome

Use this document to learn about using the NetWare Autodownload Utility for InoculateIT for
NetWare. This guide covers the purpose, requirements, and step
-
by
-
step procedures for
installing th
e utility on different NetWare platforms. Additional information about the behavior
of the Autodownload utility is also included.

The NetWare Autodownload Utility enables you to update the NetWare servers running
InoculateIT on the intranet with the curren
t Antivirus Signature. After you install and configure
the Autodownload Utility, you can achieve "zero
-
effort" Antivirus Signature Auto Download and
Distribution for InoculateIT for NetWare.

System Requirements

The Autodownload Utility consists of two comp
onents: the Autodownload server and the target
servers.

The Autodownload server component has been tested on and supports the following platforms:

NetWare 5.0

NetWare 5.1, 5.1 SP1

NetWare 6.0, 6.0 SP1

The target server component has been tested on and supp
orts the following platforms:

NetWare 3.12

NetWare 3.2

NetWare 4.11 SP6, 4.11 SP7, 4.11 SP8

NetWare 5.0

NetWare 5.1, 5.1 SP1

NetWare 6.0, 6.0 SP1

The NetWare Autodownload server must be a NetWare 5.x/6.x server. This requirement exists
because the Autodown
load server must support JVM, NCP, IPX, and IP in order to communicate
with all the versions of NetWare.

The target server can be any NetWare server with InoculateIT for NetWare installed, and which
is running the INUPMON.NLM module

Note:

The Autodownload

server plays a role as a very high level router/gateway, routing the
signature file from the FTP site to all the NetWare servers. NCP is used for the distribution
process. NCP relies on either IPX or IP. NetWare 5.x/6.x servers can be purely IP
-
based but
previous NetWare versions connect with IPX. The Autodownload server automatically defaults
to the appropriate protocol components.

NetWare Autodownload Server

When you install the NetWare Autodownload Utility on a NetWare 5.x/6.x server, the folder
SYS:
\
IN
UPDATE is created. This folder contains a TEMP folder that is used to store the latest
downloaded signature files and the INUPDATE.LOG. The SYS:
\
INUPDATE folder also contains
the following files:

INSCHED.INI

The configuration file for the
NetWare Autodownl
oad Utility.

INUPDATE.JAR

The Java applet that downloads
and distributes new signatures.

NW_Autodownload_User_Guide.html

An HTML version of this
document, containing Readme,
Installation/Uninstallation,
Known Issues, and Post
Installation information.

T
he file INSCHED.NLM is also added to the system folder SYS:
\
SYSTEM.

NetWare Autodownload Target Servers

The NetWare Autodownload target servers have the file INUPMON.NLM installed in the
SYS:
\
SYSTEM folder. Note that the Autodownload distribution server ca
n also be a target server.

Installation

Installing the Autodownload utility on NetWare version 4.x/5.x/6.x

1.

Copy the zip file to a drive on the NetWare server (for example, SYS:
\
TEMP
\
INADDON) and
extract the contents of the zip file. Alternatively, you can

extract the contents of the zip file to a
floppy disk and run the installation from the A: drive.

2.

Load INSTALL.NLM (NWCONFIG.NLM for NetWare 5.x/6.x) from the server console.

3.

Select Product options.

4.

Select Install a product not listed.

5.

Specify the full pa
th, e.g. SYS:
\
TEMP
\
INADDON.

6.

Note that INUPMON.NLM is automatically loaded when installed on a NetWare 5.x/6.x server.
Type
Load INSCHED.NLM

at the server console to make the server an Autodownload server.

\
INUPMON.NLM

2.

If INUPMON.NLM is already loaded, unload INUPMON.NLM on the server console.

3.

Load INUPMON.NLM on the server console.

Uninstalling

Uninstalling the Autodownload utilit
y on NetWare 4.x/5.x/6.x

1.

2.

Remove the INUPMON file:

Configuring the Autodownload Utility

1.

Every NetWare Autodownload target server must have INUPMON.NLM loaded. We
recommend that a line loading

INUPMON.NLM (e.g. LOAD INUPMON) be added to the
SYS:
\
SYSTEM
\
AUTOEXEC.NCF files.

2.

The Autodownload Server must have INSCHED.NLM loaded on it. We recommend that a
line loading INSCHED (e.g. LOAD INSCHED) be added to the
SYS:
\
SYSTEM
\
AUTOEXEC.NCF files on thes
e servers.

3.

The SYS:
\
INUPDATE
\
INSCHED.INI contains the settings used by the Autodownload
utility. Modify this file to change any of the following options:

Execution repeat interval (Monthly, Weekly, Daily, or Hourly)

Known problems and FAQ

1.

In a network with a large number of NetWare servers, the Autodownload Program
may take
a long time to finish a run. To manually stop the Autodownload Program do the following: at
the server Console, type
Java
-
show

to get the class ID of com.ca.av.nw.util.INUpdate, and
type
java
-
kill<ID>

to terminate the Autodownload Program. Typin
g
Java
-
exit

will
terminate the whole Java Virtual Machine (JVM). Type
Java
-
nwhelp

or
Java
-
help

to obtain
other help/hint information for the NetWare JVM.

2.

“ERROR: fail to contact server: <server name>, verify internal router!” in INUPDATE.LOG
for active

servers. In most cases, this error is the result of problems with SLP settings and/or
SAP settings. To avoid this error, please be sure that the proper network configuration
infrastructure is in place.

3.

In rare circumstances, InoculateIT for NW does not re
load after a signature update. The
INUPDATE.LOG shows “AV Signature upgraded successfully on NetWare server:
<server>”. This has occurred sporadically on the Autodownload server (NW 5.x) and once on
a NW 3.12 server. Please report this to CA immediately.

4.

Server reply: "
-
96" Files rename failure” in INUPDATE.LOG occurs occasionally. This
problem may be due to file locking. To troubleshoot this problem, please refer to the
SYS:
\
SYSTEM
\
INUPMON.LOG file on the target server for reasons/hints.

5.

Note:

For problems 4 and 5, deleting

the following files may solve the problem:

SYS:
\
INOCULAN
\
VIRSIG.UPD (
--

file created by the update)

SYS:
\
INOCULAN
\
VIRSIG.TMP (
--

renamed version of a VIRSIG.DAT file)

SYS:
\
SYSTEM
\
AVENGINE.UPD (
--

file created by the update)

SYS:
\
SYSTEM
\
AVENGINE.TMP (
-
-

renamed version of an AVENGINE.NLM file)

6.

You can manually force the signature download at the Autodownload server by typing
Load
Insched /test

at the server console.

7.

Because of a NetWare issue, an Autodownload Server running in a mixed IP/IPX
environment

may not be able to list IPX target servers located on different subnets. Testing
has shown this to be a problem for the following platforms:

NetWare 5.1 SP3, 5.1 SP 4

NetWare 6.0, 6.0 SP1, and 6.0 SP2

Novell is currently investigating this issue and will

be providing a fix in their next Service
Pack for these platforms.

As a workaround, we recommend you to setup an Autodownload Server on the following
platforms:

NetWare 5.0 with any service pack

NetWare 5.1, 5.1 SP1, or 5.1 SP2

Alternatively, you can wait

for Novell's next Service Pack release for NetWare 5.x and/or
NetWare 6.x. Please contact Novell support for information about when the next Service
Pack will be available.
