Prerequisites:
CIVE 1160 Mechanics of Materials.


Catalog Data:

3 Hours. Three hours per week of lecture and two hours of laboratory.
An introduction to the properties and beh
avior of steel, aluminum Portland cement
concrete and asphalt concrete. Also the behavior of structural members (beams and
columns) and mix designs for PC concrete and asphalt concrete.


Course Objectives:
Students will verify in the laboratory

the elasti
c and non
-
elastic
behavior of materials they studied in mechanics of materials as well as the behavior of
several simple structural elements. They will be introduced to the design of Portland
cement and asphalt concrete and the manner in which each of the

components affects the
result of the design. They will learn to conduct laboratory experiments and to critically
analyze
and interpret data and to write a concise and coherent report of the experiment.


Homework will consist mostly of formal written repo
rts which will normally be due the
week following the experiment. There will also be one design problem with a formal
report and at least two quizzes. Two or three field trips will be arranged to various
construction material plants or construction sites
.


Attendance is expected for every class and points will be deducted for missing laboratory
sessions and/or field trips.


Academic Honesty:
Students are encouraged to work together and discuss assignments,
but the work submitted, calculations, graphs, e
tc., must be that of the student submitting
it. Sources used in writing reports must be cited, including the laboratory manual.


Grading:

Seventy percent of the grade will depend upon the reports, five percent on the
quizzes, fifteen percent upon labor
atory performance and ten percent on the field trips.
