RFID

The innovative solution which enables operators

to achieve real reductions in waste

Foxel Srl is a company which boasts many years of experience in industrial automation on
rotogravure, web offset and flexo installations and provides p
rinters with total automation
know
-
how for production machinery.

Over the last few years Foxel has designed and produced a system which will be shown for
the very first time

on Foxel’s
stand at Converflex 2006. The
PRO
check

system is based on the
concept
of totally controlling the waste generated in a printing factory.

PRO
check

includes two terminals: the first is installed on the rewinder of each production
machine, and encodes all the waste which occurs during the printing of material. Coding is
achieved

using
RFID

technology and by applying electronic tags to the printed reels during
production.

RFID
-
TAGS

replace bar codes and they capture and convey information on the status of the
reels produced. This information can be read by the other machines which

are involved in
completing the working cycle of the printed materials. The RFID
-
TAGS are positioned on the
outside of reels and can be used again and again on new reels.

The encoding of waste is done automatically if the printing machine is equipped with
automatic
vision/detection devices, and can be interfaced with them using a serial signal. If, on the other
hand, the machine is not equipped with such devices there is a semi
-
automatic solution which
automatically encodes ‘out of register’ signals and oth
er types of waste signals through a
dedicated push
-
button panel, activated by the machine operator.

The second terminal is installed on each slitter
-
rewinder and decodes the data memorized in
the tag. It is interfaced with the drive system of the slitter
-
r
ewinder and stops the

slitter
-
rewinder when it gets to waste material. It also brings Foxel’s

WRS

Waste Re
covery System

into operation with

operator intervention.

The
PRO
check

system, combined with the
WRS

Wast
e

Recovery System
, provides
productivity impro
vements in the slitting department: slitter
-
rewinder performances are
increased both in terms of running speeds and staff efficiency.

PRO
check

also allows the tracking of the printed products, as well as a database of waste
produced, which provides custome
rs with a tool for evaluating the efficiency of each single
production machine and a very effective instrument for the correct distribution and
apportionment of investments in plant maintenance, with fast payback.
