Pref
ace

This is a proposal for a Studio Project for partial fulfillment of the requirements of
the Master of Science degree in Computer Systems and Software Design at Jacksonville
State University, Jacksonville, Alabama.

This proposal provides the scope and
context of the project to be undertaken. It
details the intended user group and the value that the system will have to them. It also
provides a schedule for the completion of the project, including a list of all the
deliverables and presentations required.

The intended audience of this document is the graduate faculty of the department
so that they can determine whether the project should be approved as proposed, approved
with modifications, or not approved.

It is expected that this proposal will be pres
ented to the student’s Studio
Committee before the project is formally started.

Overview

1.1.

Purpose, Scope and Objectives

Mrs. McCormick had requested that she would like to have an alumni database
that would be accessible to the alumni of the Computing Information Sciences
d
epartment through the Internet.

After much research of other universities’ web sites, I have been able to construct
what I believe would be the best workable solution.

The Alum would be able to hyperlink to the Alumni Database site from the MCIS
Home Pag
e. The web pages and the actual database would reside on the MCIS
Departmental Server. The web pages would be coded in html with JSP and JDBC used
to transfer the data in and out of an Access 97 database.

The Alum would have the option of entering a new

entry into the database or
updating information entered from the past. A password would be required to update any
Alum’s information. This is to be the main focus of the project.

The second part of the project, time permitting, would be a survey sectio
n. The
department would determine the questions used in this survey. The questions would be
created in the Alumni database to make adding or removing questions easier. The
responses of the Alum would be kept in the Alumni database also.

The third par
t would give the Alum the ability to search the Alumni database for
another Alum and to e
-
mail them if they wish.

If time does not permit the second and third part of this project could be used as
future studio projects.

I worked on a team on a project s
imilar to this in the CS 501 class. I have a good
working knowledge of html and Access. I have done some work in JSP.

1.2.

Literature Search Results

While I searched the Web sites of many schools, there were few examples of
department based web sites that
could be emulated. The JSU Alumni Society Web site is
included under references.

1.3.

Assumptions and Constraints

This project will be constrained by the policies in place for the Jacksonville State
University’s Web Site. It will depend on Jacksonville State Un
iversity’s Web Site for
connection.

1.4.

Project Deliverables

The following items will be delivered as part of the project. See next section for
tentative delivery dates.

Software Project Management Plan

Software Requirements Specifications

Software Design D

Software Quality Assurance Plan including a Software Verification and Validation
Plan and the Test Design Document

Project Organization

Mrs. Mary Jane Peters has agreed to act as
a “customer” for this project as she has
been involved with alumni contacts for quite a while and understands the department’s
needs for such a product.

I will interface with the group that maintains the Jacksonville State University Web
Site when this pro
duct is closer to acceptance testing. .
