March 25 Group: Biotechnology Industry

Daniel Bollag is the Senior Vice President of Regulatory Affairs and Quality at Ariad. The
company’s
mission

is to discover and develop new drugs that will dramatically expand and improve
current treatment options for patients with cancer. Therefore, the i
ndustry we will be covering is
b
iotechnology.

According to the American Chemical Society, “
b
iotechnology,
in the broadest sense, involves the
use of living organisms or cell processes to make useful products.”

This industry, which is quite new,
incorporates a number of different scientific disciplines, ranging from microbiology, chemical
engineering, chemistry
, and biochemistry. Much of the work performed in the biotechnology industry
involves “improving the diagnosis and treatment of hereditary diseases,” as well as researching safer
drugs, “more environmentally friendly herbicides and pesticides…and microbia
l processes to clean up
the environment.”

To get involved in the b
iotechnology industry, it is advised that one
becomes serious about

science in high school, taking classes such as chemistry, biology and genetics.
From there, one
must then
further their

studies by taking more advanced courses in college, such as molecular biology, and finding
out if this area is one for them.
It is suggested that those interested in biotechnology
obtain good
laboratory skills
,

as well as research during these years. Aft
er obtaining a bachelor’s degree, there are
two
main
areas in which someone interested in biotechnology can
work
. The first involves the actual
scientific research, and the second involves administrative tasks such as “developing the company’s
overall bus
iness and marketing plans.” No matter which road is chosen, experts in the field advise that
“you have to have a Ph.D. to advance” in the biotechnology world.

The career outlook for jobs in biotechnology is quite promising. As new businesses and
companie
s are created, the demand for workers interested in biotechnology will certainly increase.
Today, biotechnologists, chemical engineers, as well as sales and marketing experts, are finding jobs in
the ever
-
expanding biotechnology field. Basically, as long

as there is research to be done, jobs will be
available.

As previously mentioned, there are many areas in which biotechnology is involved. From safer
drugs to more environmentally

friendly

pesticides, the biotechnology industry is always looking for way
s
in which to improve the world. The work done at Dr. Bollag’s company, Ariad, is
one such way. The
vision of Ariad is “to transform the lives of cancer patients with breakthrough medicines.” If
biotechnology companies continue to improve and expand the
ir research, then future improvements in
the world are sure to come.
