Road to low-carbon society by "Power electronics"

Electronics Research Group for Sustainability

We are working on the research of "power
electronics" that is key technology for the achievement
of low-carbon society.
Do you know power electronics?
Power
electronics is a technology that enables the effective
use of electrical energy with special
semiconductors(power devices)
Why does power electronics enable the effective
use of electrical energy?
In earlier method, the
electrical energy with unnecessary energy is taken at
first, and the output is adjusted by throwing away the
unnecessary energy as heat(Figure 1). On the other
hand, new method doesn't put out unnecessary
electrical energy, because pulsed required energy is
only taken and averaged for output. Therefore the
efficiency of 100% can be achieved in principle.
Where is power electronics used?
It is used for
most equipment that is related to electricity(Figure 2),
such as: air conditioners, refrigerators and
electromagnetic cookers in home electronics, electric
vehicles/hybrid-power cars in transportation,
large-scale machines in industry, photovoltaic
generators and wind power generators in renewable
energy generation which are recently researched
actively. Let's introduce power electronics in your life
as an example. Wall adapters(AC-DC converters) for
notebook computers output direct current(DC) from
100V alternative current(AC) of outlets, and inverters
efficiently output optimum AC to rotate the motors of
hybrid-power cars and a air conditioners
smoothly(Figure 3).
Then how does power electronics change in the
future?
The size of power electronics equipment is
miniaturized to tenth in the 15 years, and it is expected
that this tendency will continue in the future [3](Figure
4). Two effects are expected by the miniaturization.
One is to be able to apply power electronics in more
narrow space of the equipment and the other one is to
be able to meet increasing demand by the
improvement of mass production capability. It is
thought that these two effects widen the application of
power electronics for effective use of electrical energy
all over the world. Electronics Research Group for
Sustainability is exactly centering on the research of
miniaturization, integration and high energy efficiency
of power electronics.
The research of Electronics Research Group for
Sustainability is closely related to the environmental
model city vision of Kitakyushu city.
In “The Action
Plan of Kitakyushu Eco-Model City(Kitakyushu
Green Frontier Plan)”, Kitakyushu city make the
declaration that Kitakyushu city creates the high-value
added for environmental technology to construct the
industrial structure for leading low-carbon society[4].
For the preparation of concrete technology base in the
declaration, Kitakyushu city is promoting the
technological development needed for the electronics
application to low-carbon society under
industry-academia collaboration.
As mentioned above, "power electronics" is key

technology for the achievement of low-carbon society.
It is our role to lead the technology of minimization,
integration and higher energy efficiency from
Kitakyushu city for widening the application of power
electronics all over the world.
