The Amazon Web Services Debacle

a)

Amazon offers web services to businesses in need of cloud computing. Amazon has
several physical sites that contain huge data centers which

offer hosting services to
companies.
Amazon Web Services provide "cloud" or utility
-
style computing in which
customers pay only for the computing power and storage they need, on remote
computer
s.

b)

The morning of April 21, 2011, the
Amazon

Web Services (
AWS) center located in
Northern Virginia

experienced

serious outage
s

with its Elastic Compute Cloud and other
Web services, causing downtime at major sites such as HootSuite, Reddit and
Foursquare
.

The failure of Amazon’s Web Services was due to technical

failures in their
servers at their da
ta centers.

The Apple iPad

a)

The iPad is
a platform for audio

visual media including books, periodicals, m
ovies,
music, games, and web content. Its size and weight falls between those of contemporary
smartphones and laptop computers. The iPad runs the same operating system as the

iPod
Touch and iPhone
and can run its own applications as well as iPhone applicat
ions.

T
he
iPad is controlled by a mult
i
-
touch display,
a departure from most previous tablet
computers, which u
sed a pressure
-
triggered stylus
as well as a virtual onscreen keyboard
in lieu of a physical keyboard. The iPad uses a Wi
-
Fi data connection to b
rowse the
Internet, load and stream media, and install software. Some models also have a 3G
wireless data connection which can connect to HSPA or EV
-
DO data networks. The
device is managed and synced by iTunes on a personal computer via USB cable

b)

Apple rel
eased the iPad on
April 3, 2010 and sold 3 million units within 3 months.
During 2010, Apple so
ld 14.8 million iPads worldwide
representing 75 percent of tablet
PC sales at the end of 2010.

Once again, Apple Inc. led by Steve Jobs changed the
Information
Technology market

with an innovative idea. Apple showed its technical
superiority and strategic advantage by changing the marketplace

as competitors scramble
to mark
et their versions of a tablet.

Part 3
: Do you believe the IT industry learns from its mistakes? Why

(or why not)?

F
or the most part
,

I think

that the IT industry learns from its mistakes because if an IT
company continued to not deliver a good product it would

be out of business. Currently, the
IT industry is very competitive and the consumer has plenty of different vendors to choose
from.
