SFP switch for home network applications:
Optospider™ Home LAN Switch
The Optospider™ Home LAN Switch was devel-
oped for the application as central switch unit in
home networks.
It offers 4 slots for 100Mbps SFP transceivers
(100Base-Fx), especially for POF SFP transceivers.
The design as SFP switch allows the adaptation to
the really existing requirements in the home: trans-
ceiver type and transceiver number are flexible and
selectable with respect to optical link distance and
link number.
The DieMount POF SFP transceivers
 Optospider™ POF SFP 650nm simplex,
 Optospider™ POF SFP 650nm duplex,
 Optospider™ POF SFP 470nm simplex,
 Optospider™ POF SFP 470nm duplex,
fit to the SFP slots, but also other 100Mbps SFP transceiver according to the SFP multisource agreement are
suitable for Optospider™ Home LAN Switch.
The Optospider™ Home LAN Switch comprises 3 RJ-45 ports for the connection to electrical copper cables:
2 Ethernet ports for 100Mbps (10/100Base-T) and 1 Ethernet port for up to 1Gbps data transmission
The switch is compliant with IEEE 802.3 Ethernet, IEEE 802.3u Fast Ethernet and IEEE 802.3x full duplex and
flow control.

are feasible. E.g. the switch can be configured for the subsequent special applications:
o port-allocation by VLAN-tagging and thereby configuration as 1 to 1 mediaconverter (3x3 ports),
o priority setting for separate ports (QoS),
o data rate limitation for each port.

Mechanical dimensions:
The Optospider™ Home LAN Switch is mechanically designed to equal breadth as standard 5.25’’ CD
ROM or DVD drives (see drawing right). This opens the option to integrate the device to a standard com-
puter housing in combination with a NAS server or SAT IP server. The printed circuit board has dimensions
142mm x 100mm (protruding components not taken into account) and may be used without the standard
housing in a computer housing.
The switch comes with 4 plastic bumpers that may be fixed at the bottom of the device, if it is used as a
stand alone unit.

Typical application:
The Optospider™ Home LAN Switch is typically used as a central unit in a POF based home network. The
next figure shows the typical connection to the network infrastructure.
Via a Fast Ethernet RJ-45 port the access router is connected to the switch in order to realize the broad
band access to the public network. The 1Gbps RJ-45 port receives the IPTV signals from a SAT>IP local
IPTV server. Depending on the typ of IPTV server, a number of >10 HDTV channels may occur. A 1Gbps
port is necessary as a consequence.
The SFP ports are used to connect each room in the apartment or building via POF.
Local devices like printers, scanners or NAS servers are electrically connected to the switch, too.
