Molecular Genetics Culminating Task:
Biotechnology
Debate

Your task is to research and explore the use of
bovine somatotropin

in boosting
milk production in cows. In some parts of the United States, the hormone has been
approved for use on dairy farms, but it has been banned in Canada.

For the assignment, the class will be divided into two teams:

Team

A

will be arguing that the

use of bovine somatotropin should be
allowed
.

Team

B

will be arguing that the use of bovine somatotropin should be
disallowed
.

Each Team should further be divided into groups of 2 individuals. Each group will
research one of the following components (cir
cle the one you will be researching):

Component

Specific expectations and suggestions

Molecular Biology

Research and report on the genetic engineering techniques that have
been used to isolate and mass produce bovine somatotropin

You may use visuals to
illustrate the processes

Health and Safety

Research the pathway by which bovine somatotropin boosts milk
production in cows

Research any side effects to the health of the cow, or to the consumer
of the milk

Identify any changes in the health care of the c
ows after they have
been placed on bovine somatotropin

Economics (1)

Reseach dairy production in the States where the hormone has been
approved, before and after the hormone was in use

Compare the Canadian market to the U.S. market for dairy products

Rese
arch Canadian export of dairy products to the U.S. and vice versa

Economics (2)

Evaluate the global significance of the introduction of bovine
somatotropin

Identify the lobby groups and their arguments on both sides of the
issue

Regulations and
Policies

Investigate Canadian policy with respect to the approval of
biotechnological tools

Should bovine somatotropin be banned in Canada based on these
regulations? Justify your answer.

Social and Ethical
Issues

Identify any social or environmental costs associa
ted with the use of
bovine somatotropin in Canada

Interview a dairy farmer and elicit his/her opinion with respect to a
boost in production of milk using bovine somatotropin

You will be provided two class periods to conduct your research. Once the research has
been completed, each team is required to synthesize their findings and prepare a
presentation for the class arguing their position.

Each group in the team will be requi
red to present their part. Team A will present first
while Team B listens and prepares a rebuttal. This will be repeated with the teams
swapping roles. Team A will then present their rebuttal followed by Team B.

The teacher

will judge which team has a stro
nger case. Let the battle begin
!
