GSSP

Changes

Rick Liston and Katie Lester of the Graduate School presented information regarding the
changes being made in the GSSP. The state budget for the GSSP is $23 million each year. The
vast majority of this goes to tuition remission and it has exceed
ed this the last two years. As a
result, the GSSP has a $4 million deficit. The Provost and the Vice
-
Chancellor asked to make
cuts without curtailing recruitment. Could do slots but this would halt recruitment. (See
handouts).

There would be less impac
t on the COE than other colleges due to the match already
implemented.

Tuition Remission is $12,048. The Tu
ition Remission match is 25%. Tuition match will be
about the same. TA’s all of it is paid. Students on no state money

exceptions must be ma
de.

Tuition beyond limit will be charged to the funding source.

Matching

time limits. Taking away premium tuition being treated as state money.

A

requirement
has been added
to make a good faith effort to apply for Residency in a timely
manner.

Rick
L
iston will talk to Dr. Willit
s on the exception for EOL students.

part of the program. Want to establish
genetic engineering minor. We need to approve the prefix GES

Genetic
Engineering Society.
Are there any concerns in using the Engineering in the title? BME said he saw no conflicts with
what they were doing. Seems quite different than what we are doing.

Only issue on the docket is whether COE is ok with engineering in the prefix. Scattergood said
Dick Keltie

had no issues. Are there any? No

The Committee d
iscussed the merits of having/not having GSR’s on committees. The Graduate
School sometimes ha

to make 10

Pros are highest

academic degree and we need to take it seriously.
The GSR should be u

the grad school can rely on this person to give

Does take some time. Sometimes the GSR doesn’t remember wh
at went on

time passed,
etc.

Several of the colleges came back to board and do think it’s a good idea.

When you are a member of the Graduate Faculty, it is an obligation to serve as a GSR. The Grad
School will keep a record of the faculty that say no
, then report to the Department Head.

The consensus at the last meeting was that the GSR should be put on the POW as a committee
member and to hold approval of the POW until the GSR has been identified. Dr. Matzen s
aid the
consensus here is what he

at the ABGS.
