What

is Search Engine
Optimization? (SEO)

Search
engine optimization

(
SEO
) is
all about getting your website more
visible on search sites like Google and Bing without spending a lot of
money on keyword buys or other forms of advertising.

Search engines use complex sets of rules and algorithms to determine
which sites appear highest in the search results when people are looking
for products services or information. The more often your site shows up,
the more traffic and marketing opportunities you will have.

SEO is about understanding how search engines work and structuring
information about your website with to best fit the search engines
criteria. It’s a big subject

volumes have been written on it and billions
are spent each year pursuing best practices

and there is no “magic
bullet” that will make your site jump to the top of the search site listings.

The tools covered in this manual will help you put together good basic
SEO practices on your website so that it is visible to a wide variety of
search engines including local search sites, image search sites, and
academic and vertical search engines.

The key to good SEO is the search term or “
key words
” that will be
preferred by your target audience. These are the words that a potential
visitor might type into Google to find your business. For instance,
someone looking for an emergency towing service in

Seattle would be likely to type in “emergency,” “towing”

and “Seattle.” Those would be the important keywords

that need to be used in all the right

places in order for

the website to show up in the results.

Well optimized sites will have relevant content using keywords

and formatting that remove barriers to the indexing activities

of Search Engines. Linked sites and other factors also play a part,

but using these tools will help you improve visibility and give you
improved visibility and site traffic..

Next Select
Website Name and Keywords
from the menu.

The instructions on this page (in the custard colored boxes) provide good
advice on how to fill in this information

take time to read it through. The
name you place in the website name should be the name you believe
people looking for your business would use. (For instance, the company
that creates these tools is actually “
Cielo

Azul, LLC,” but we list ourselves as
our DBA of “
Talkspot
.” )

On the keyword section, please take the time to think about your business
and how your potential customers would search for it. The big questions is
“What would they likely type into Google if they were looking for my
website?” Those are the “search terms you will want to include.

Don’t be “greedy” by trying to put in too many search terms

try to keep
your entries to somewhere around a dozen or so. (If you put in too many,
the search engine algorithms may actually penalize you for it.)

Work to be as relevant as possible. If you sell candy say so

few people will
type in “confections”

and only use jargon if your customers do.

Remember to click the
Save Button
when you have finished.

use to describe each page on your site. (We have included a search
engine result for
Talkspot

as an example.)

To enter each description, click the Small Blue Pencil Icon

Enter each description and
Save
.
When all descriptions are complete,

Next select
Image Descriptions
from the menu.

There’s a saying: “a picture is worth a thousand words”

This saying wasn’t about images on your website and search engine
optimization, but it could be. Search engines do examine your images
when the index websites, and most website owners do not think about
image descriptions and names so taking time to describe your images in
a way that incorporates your search terms and keywords will improve
your visibility in search engine results.

Type your description in for each photo or image and remember to click
Done

when complete.

You can also rename the images themselves by selecting

the
Manage Files
option on the
FILES
menu on your

Website toolbar. (Click on the image name, RIGHT CLICK

on the file and select RENAME.)

Next select
Friendly Web Page Links
from the menu.

URL’s are website page addresses, and if you’ve ever cut and pasted a
page link in an email, you know they can get quite large and sometimes
look like random gibberish that would be hard to communicate easily
during a telephone call or in a piece of printed material.

Similarly, your search engines might also have trouble parsing a
weblink

with several control characters, brackets, etc.

In order to make your pages easier for search engines to parse, and for
you to communicate,
Talkspot

provides a utility to generate “Friendly
Web Links.” which generate descriptive URL’s that are useful in print and
even over the phone.

Take a few minutes and use this utility and remember to do so every time
you add or materially change a page. It will help your SEO and may help
you get your page recommended by an editorial source or print media.

With the creation of your
Talkspot

website, you’ve earned the title of
“Webmaster. Major search engine sites have created tools specifically
for you that can show you how your site visitors are finding you and

perhaps more importantly

help you identify and diagnose any
problems that might be keeping your site from getting more.

Three tool sets that we absolutely recommend you sign up for and use
are Google Webmaster Tools, Google Analytics and Bing Webmasters
Tools. Using these tools will help Bing and Google awareness of your site
and will give you access to some amazingly useful information regarding
sources of traffic and where links to your site are.

For each of these three sites, take a few minutes to sign up and register
your website, and you will be provided with a “code” for your site that
you will want to copy and past into the
Talkspot

SEO tools.

Other things you can do to improve site traffic:

1.
Focus on your keywords throughout your website

Search engine algorithms seek to identify the relevance of your site
compared to the search terms people are looking for. Make sure your
keywords are used in headlines and in subheads and that you use the
format option on the text editor. (Select Headline 1 or 2.)

2.
Build quality links. If you belong to business associations or other
groups that list member association websites, make sure yours is
included. Work with your distribution (retailers, distributors) and
others to establish cross
-
links when possible and search for other
ways to “hurl your URL.”

3.
Get involved in blogging and post content regularly that is relevant to
your site. Search engines are attracted to sites that regularly update
content with relevant content.

4.
Build your presence in social media and remember to include your
website links on your Facebook,
Linkedin
, Twitter, Google Plus,
YouTube
and other pages.

5.
Resist the temptation to sign up with so
-
called SEO experts who
promise the world overnight. (And you will hear from plenty of
them.) Buyer beware please.

6.
Use the Social Media Widget on your pages.

Any good SEO person will tell you that success in

search engine optimization is a marathon, not a

sprint, and good relevant content formatted

correctly and added to over time is really the best

way to make your site visible.
