Course Description

The aim
of this course is

to develop an understanding of the aggregate macroeconomic
variables such as national income, growth, produc
tivity, unemployment, inflation and

economic
fluctuation
s
. We look at how

these macro variables are defined and
measure
d
; identify the basic
observ
ed trends in
related macro
data; explore their causes and effects.

We will also e
m
phasize
how
they relate to each other and their relevance to economic policy making.

The latter half of the course
will focus on the implications of an open economy context f
or these macroeconomic variables,
through exploration of international trade,
capital flows,
exchange rates and balance of payments.

The lectures will be combined with problem solving sessions. There will be
four

exams,
two
quiz
zes

a midterm and a final,

as well as
weekly

homework assignments

to be answered in

the
problem
-
solving sessions
. The
course grade

will

consist of class attendance & assignments (10%);
