Building an Effective Web Presence
with Search Engine Optimization
“Build it and they will come” is not true
when it comes to websites.
The essentials of creating a successful web presence that
is rooted in a company’s branding and marketing strategy
was the topic of our July 28 Chamber breakfast mixer.
The presentation by Shala W.Graham,Principal/Creative
Director of
SW Creatives
was held at
Hollywood
East Café in
Westfield
Wheaton’s
Restaurant Row,
featuring a
hot breakfast
including
Dim Sum.
Shala discussed cost-effective and free resources for
monitoring
website traffic and
ranking higher in
Google searches
such as SEO (or
Search Engine
Optimization).
For instance,she
is optimized for
“dc design firm”
so if you google
that,she
should appear
on the first
page of Google
in the main
organic results
section.That
is a result of
her SEO
efforts.
On Aug 25,the Chamber hosted a “Meet the Candidates”
Networking Happy Hour at the beautiful 1894 Restaurant
and Tavern in Kensington,Md.The restaurant offered
fabulous drinks
and appetizers
at special happy
hour pricing
to a large crowd
of over 50
participants.
Many candidates
from District 18
and 19 and
those running
for Montgomery County Executive and County Council
seats were in attendance, allowing voters to have one-on-
one
discussions
with
their
prospec-
tive and
current
local
represen-
tatives.
The
stimulat-
ing conversations were focused on many local concerns
including the new Costco store planned for Westfield

Chamber of Commerce
Message from the Wheaton & Kensington Chamber of Commerce President
Kathleen Guinan,CEO,Crossway Community,Inc.
I am honored to serve a
term this year as the
President of the Wheaton
& Kensington Chamber
of Commerce.I have been
a proud member of the
Wheaton & Kensington
community for over 20
years and currently serve
as Chief Executive Officer
of Crossway Community,
an entrepreneurial,non-
profit educational organi-
zation,a family university.
The Chamber provides
networking opportunities,
business leads and referrals,and
proactive leadership on legislative and
economic development issues for the
business community of Wheaton and
Kensington.While there are significant
economic challenges this year,the
Wheaton/Kensington community is
experiencing continued growth and
development in both local jobs and
business expansion.
The support for small business owners
and entrepreneurs is one of the keys
to growing new jobs and stimulating
economic recovery.The Chamber will
promote the activities and voice of the
small business owner and entrepreneur
to ensure that they have a more promi-
nent role at all levels of government.
An educated work force is critical to
the success of the community.The
economic environment of
the 21st century is rapidly
changing.New technolo-
gies emerge constantly,
bringing with them the
demand for new skills,
and our education system
needs to keep up with
the rapid pace of change.
By 2018 there will be
46.8 million job openings,
63 percent of which will
require some form of
post-secondary education.
As President Obama
stated,If we,as a nation,
offer all our children the best education
possible from the cradle through a career
then not only will America’s workers
compete and succeed,America will
compete and succeed.The Chamber will
advocate for educational programs from
cradle through career.
As the new President of the Wheaton &
Kensington Chamber of Commerce,
I encourage you to come to one of our
mixers,networking events,or special
events.Please consider investing your
time and your talent. The return on your
investment will be great.
Sincerely,
Kathleen Guinan

Hundreds of people attended the all-day festival featuring
food, crafts, vendor booths, and also an annual art show in
Town Hall.
The first Monday of September was made a national holiday
in June 1894,the same year as the founding of Kensington.
Kensington’s 43rd Annual Labor Day Parade featured
High School bands,Boy Scouts,horses,old cars,pirates,
the Washington Revels,as well as local and state cam-
paigning politicians on Monday,September 6th.
The parade started at Plyers Mill Road and St.Paul Street,
went down Connecticut Avenue and around town past the
reviewing stand and beyond.In this year’s parade,there
were 75 parade units, each consisting of between two to
100 people.
Richard Ehrenreich has driven his replica 1929 Mercedes-
Benz SSK Roadster in the parade for the Wheaton &
