CONTEXT:

One
of the newer tools in the military’s toolbox is the unmanned drone, which allows for
reconnaissance and engagement of targets with none of the risk to human pilots. The drones are
expensive, and are often lost in
-
flight due to equipment failure or lag in r
esponse time between
operator and drone.

In an effort to reduce collisions, the

U.S. Air Force is currently working with several private firms
to develop a new type of aerial drone that will have the ability to think and anticipate a controller’s
actions
during takeoff and landings at busy airport terminals where both manned and unmanned
planes launch.

Several contracts have been awarded to firms to assist in developing this
predictive software to anticipate the pilot’s reaction.

Michigan
-
based Soar
Technologies, for example, is working on its “Schema Engine,” which uses
memory management, pattern matching, and goal
-
based reasoning to infer the intentions of the
operator. The Schema Engine w
ill also be able to determine if

a pilot is flying erraticall
y or has
lost control. Additionally, a California
-
based company, Stottler Henke Associates, is working on a
rival system called Intelligent Pilot Intent Analysis System, which will “represent and execute
expert pilot reasoning processes to infer other pilo
ts’ intents in the same way human pilots
currently do.”

Prevention Relevance

In the war on terrorism, new technology that allows minimal human risk is growing increasingly
popular and necessary.

Prevention Techniques

By investigating new technologies and improving on existing ones, the U.S. helps to ensure the
risk to military personnel
is minimal.

How will the new system affect the price of each drone?
