What is Long Term Evolution?



Long Term Evolution (LTE) is a fourth
-
generation (4G) standard for mobile
telecommunications.



When deployed to spec
ification, it will provide a faster, more reliable (particularly
in urban areas) broadband capability than
third
-
generation (
3G
)

technologies.



Although still in its early stages of proliferation, it is likely that LTE will become
the ubiquitous standard f
or mobile broadband radio access networks worldwide.

Importance of the standardisation process



Standardisation is a key step in establishing a market for technology.



In general, manufacturers will develop equipment in specific LTE bands where
there is a
market and standardisation.

LTE is standardised internationally through the
3rd
Generation Part
nership Project
(3GPP). 3GPP creates operating standards for LTE in a number of spectrum
frequency bands.



3GPP
is in the process
of

standardising LTE services in
Bands 26 and 27

that
would cover those assigned for PPDR in the 800

MHz band in the Asia
-
Paci
fic
region
.

LTE for public safety



The Association of Public
-
Safety Communications Officials has endorsed LTE as
the standard of choice for public safety mobile broadband networks

.




A new

has been approved by the

International
Telecommunic
ation Union

Radiocommunications Sector (ITU

R)

which

lists
LTE as a recommended standard for
PPDR

broadband applications

Pacific region

(without specifying

).

Current commercial LTE deployments in 800 MHz



In Europe
, a number of
network

providers have deployed, or are deploying, LTE
in the
European
800

MHz spectrum band.
The European 800MHz band
arrangements are substantially differ
ent to the proposed Australia 800MHz band.



The first such deployment was in Sweden, operated by Teliasonera in December
2009

.

In Germany, Vodafone has deployed LTE

and Telefonica commenced
operation of its LTE service on 1

July 2011 in rural areas

.




In

the United Kingdom, British Telecom (BT)

and Everything Everywhere

trialled
LTE in the 800 MHz band from
September

2011 to July 2012.
The Cornwall trial
demonstrated that 800 MHz is optimal for the roll out of 4G LTE in rural areas.
