San Diego State University)

The Center for Commercialization of Advanced Technology (CCAT) on behalf of the

Naval
Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technology Division (NAVEODTECHDIV) is sponsoring a
nationwide solicitation seeking engineering and manufacturing (EM) proposals in the area of
robotic remote tool change. The solicitation is being administered by San Die
go State University
Research Foundation (SDSURF) under the auspices of the Cooperative Agreement N66001

:
The request for proposals
(RFP)
is being issued to petition for engineering and
manufacturing (EM) proposals in the area of robotic remote tool change. This technology has
existed in manufacturing on large

industrial robots for some time. The challenge becomes scaling
that technology onto a small mobile robotic platform while maintaining reliability in adverse
terrain and weather conditions. In particular, the near
-
term primary goal of this effort is to
ach
ieve the ability to remotely change end effectors on the Man Transportable Robotic Systems
(MTRS) robot while it remains positioned down range on a target of interest, such as an
improvised explosive device (IED). This will remove the need to drive the rob
ot back and forth
from the operator to the target to manually change tools. EOD technicians will be able to quickly
adapt to evolving threat scenarios by having the ability to choose the right tool for the job
from a
tool caddy on the robot.
