Which Technologies for Ensuring Energy Security?

Energy is one of
the critical components for guaranteeing a smooth running of nations, whatever their
state of development, and an efficient operation of business.

There are four major energy end
-
use
sectors at world level: industrial (51%), transportation (20%), residenti
al (18%) and commercial (11%).
Energy Security implies the availability of sufficient and reliable energy in the form needed for these
applications and compatible with a sustainable Society.

The topic of energy security is a very broad one with many facets

ranging from reliability of supply,
efficiency in production, risk management, prevention and mitigation of accidents, environmental
protection to policy formulation, financial investment, pricing adjustment and regulation development.
The present Seminar

should be focused on how technology can contribute to the fulfillment of the
general objective of energy security, more particularly in ISTC countries, be they net energy producers
or consumers.

Contributions are invited on all related issues and notably:

Energy sources:

o

Oil technology: improvements in oil well recovery, recuperation of oil shale,

protection of
oil (and gas) platforms against drifting ice, pipelines (oil and gas)under melting of
permafrost

o

Gas technology: the advent of fracking

o

Coal tech
nology: the future of clean coal

o

Renewables: geothermal sources, photo
-
voltaic electricity in middle latitudes, wind
energy parks, small hydropower, biomass (natural sources, agricultural refuse, wood
waste, biomethanisation, biofuels) and wave energy

o

Nu
clear technology: small NPPs

Energy saving and emission reduction

o

Energy conservation, notably in cold climatic conditions

o

Co² storage and capture

o

Combined cycles: for gas, electricity and heat; for hydropower, electricity and irrigation

o

The future of hy
drogen as an energy vector

o

Fuel cells and heat pumps as efficient energy conversion systems

Energy distribution

o

Long range transportation of primary energy sources

2

o

The future of collective urban heating

o

Electricity distribution: centralized vs. decentrali
zed production, smart grids

o

The special case of desert and mountainous areas

The emphasis on regional, national and local issues is welcomed for enhancing the specificity and
originality of this ISTC SAC Seminar.

The program of the two
-
day event will in
clude presentations and follow
-
up discussions.

SAC welcomes business, scientific and government leaders from around the world to participate in this
