The organisation

Technikon is an Austrian SME with a highly spe
cialized multinational team of scientists and
engineers. The main activities focus on risk assessment of secure HW/SW solutions and the
integration of platforms used for concurrent engineering and secure information sharing. The
company has been involved i
n several EC projects dealing with cryptography, secure computing,
secure data exchange and Digital Rights Management in FP6 and FP5 (e.g. biometric
authentication, secure Smartcards, mobile working enviro
n
ment).

Technikon has been actively employing coll
aborative workspaces for multinational R&D teams:
e
-
suite

from Hyperwave for industrial clusters (microelectronic cluster, wood
-
cluster Carinthia,
etc.),
BSCW

from Fraunhofer (several FP5 R&D projects like Finger_Card, USB
-
Crypt,
Smart_USB, Setic, etc.) or

Open Source products like
ph
-
project

(FP 6 projects SCARD, etc.) or
plone

(Medea+ projects eg. HYMNE, etc.). Technikon can revert back to more than 5 years of
experience with more than 1000 named users.

Currently Tec
h
nikon is acting as coordinator of SCA
RD, a FP6 STREP project in the EC Trust
and Security regime. Technikon has gathered experience in running collaborative platforms on
the net through previous EC
-
funded projects and has acted as expert partner in choosing
knowledge management software for c
lustering initiatives.

Main research challenges

Overcome end user
difficulties

to foster the active use of collaborative workspace features within
the individual working environmen
ts. Integration of the collaborative workspace in the local
explorer and time scheduling applications.

Security and trust concept

for data transfer, access and storage for multi
-
standard environments.
Combine TPM (Trusted platform modules) concepts for Win
dows and Open Source Operating
Systems and Collaborative Workspace.

Initial proposal ideas

Create a trusted and affordable collaborative workspace focused on “un
-
trained” end user
requirements. Revert back on Medea+, FP5 and FP6 project experience and use
r feedback.

Motivation for research from a business perspective

(for industrial organisations only)

Major service provider for collaborative workspace environments. Close the security, trust and
usability gap of existing tools.
