Lecture 1:

Tree Adjoining Grammar, Formal Syntax, and Natural Language
Processing

Tree Adjoining Grammar (TAG) is
a simple mathematical formalism

which, through tree
-
rewriting,
generates synt
actic descriptions.

I

will provide an introduction
to TAG and it
s mathematical and

computational properties, but I wil
l concentrate on how TAG can be

used to provide interes
ting
analyses in formal syntax.

I will close

with a brief summary of recent r
esearch in the area of

"metagrammars", which are devices for generatin
g TAG grammars.
