Information Technology Unit 1

Ch 3
, ICT in a global society, p 104

ICT issues:

Robotics 7 Artificial intelligence, p 116

1

Describe the nature of AI.

The nature of an AI is articifial intelligence. They’re faster at calculations and assigned
tasks.

2

List
examples of the application of AI.

Expert medical advice, neural networks to discover patterns in business and science data,

Computer
games, chess & simulation games
,
Speech recognition to control computers
,
Handwriting &
character recognition in scanners
& PDAs
,
Controlling robotics in industry
,
Computer vision and
image processing, eg. Used in surveillance software

Issues with robots and AI

1

What is the main issue with AI?

Replacement of humans
,
Reliance on decisions made by AI c
ontrolled programs and mach
ines,

Robots and AI programs are not as smart as humans
,
Robots cannot make decisions about complex
matters that often include values
,
Robots and AI programs replace humans
,
Communication
between humans and robots

2

List the four main reasons AI is used.

a.

Much quicker

b.

More reliable

c.

More consistent

d.

Always available

3

Briefly elaborate under the following four points the main considerations when using AI
and robots:

a.

AI’s at this technological stage are referred

to as Dumb AI’s. They’re geniuses but
only in their programmed fields. The AI’s so far cannot learn or adapt the way a
human can to new ideas and information.

b.

Robots cannot make decisions about complex matters that often include values

Robots as opposed t
o AI’s are simple there to perform tasks within a set range; they
can’t make a decision about
anything that isn’t preprogramed

c.

Robots and AI programs replace humans

The fear that AI’s may replace humans is well founded if AI technology was several
hundred
years more advanced, until then it is foundless.

d.

Communication between humans and robots

Communication already exists between AI’s and robots. When designed the
machines would have a human
-
AI interface installed.
