Objectives:




Gain an understanding of the differe
nce between Routed and
Routing Protocols.



Determine what protocols are running on a given network and
determine whether they are Routed or Routing protocols.



Learn how to configure and manage a network with Cisco’s
proprietary Interior Gateway Routing Pro
tocol (IGRP).



Verify Network operability and efficiency using
Neotrace

or
similar program.



Background:


As you would have discovered in Semester two routers need some way to
communicate between them and user data needs some way to travel from its source

to
destination address. These protocols that are used by the network are group into two
distinct categories by the function they perform within the network, the two groups
are called Routed and Routing protocols, not too be confused with each other. The

two groups are separate and provide completely different functions, which most
networks require. Each group consists of multiple protocols and they can be used
separately or together depending on the network they are running on.


Routed Protocols are tho
se that carry user data from its source to destination and are
routed through the network. Routing protocols route the user data through the
network and decide on what path the data should take depending on the metrics it
utilising in making the decision.



The protocols used on a network are easily found if you have access to any network
functions/equipment, by using the correct method/commands the list of protocols in
use on the network can readily be discovered. The protocols in being utilised on your
network should be documented in you network configuration file, however they may
not be current as people have a tendency to neglect documentation of changes. So it
is best to discover you’re the current protocols for yourself, this you should already
kno
w.


In the mid 1980’s Cisco first developed its own routing protocol to supersede the
protocol of the day, RIP. Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (IGRP)is a dynamic
distance
-
vector routing protocol, as apposed to Rip which is only a distance
-
vector
protoc
ol, and uses four metrics to base decisions on. By basing its decisions on four
metrics IGRP is able to provide a much more efficient and quicker path for the data as
it will take bandwidth, reliability, load, and network delay into consideration when
mak
ing decisions. This makes IGRP a superior metric to use in large and complex
networks where hop
-
count will not provide the best solution. For a truly efficient
network correct selection of protocols is a must, but how do you know if your
network is opera
ting efficiently?


Network monitoring tools are an excellent way of monitoring your networks
performance and throughput and ultimately help in the determination of network
operability. Once your network is in place you cannot simply leave it be, you must
monitor its performance constantly as user needs change and as the network services
and the network itself changes. Network tools provide a variety of performance
measuring tools depending on the package used, but all will provide you with tools
for monit
oring the efficiency of your network and help in finding trouble spots or
sections that need improvement.

Laboratory Work:

Since the routers in the lab may have pre
viously been setup using RIP it
will be easier to migrate from RIP to IGRP initially (later on you’ll do
IGRP from scratch).


Discover and document any current configuration on the router.

Now simply enter the configuration mode and enable IGRP on the
terminal. What networks are now using IGRP?
