The Institute of Biotechnology (IBT) is a st
ate research institute, leader in
molecular biology and biomedical reasearch in Lithuania. It comprises 8
laboratories (140 employees). The IBT pursues basic and applied research in
two major themes: 1) Genetic and molecular studies of DNA restriction
-
modi

biomedical proteins. The latter subject includes investigation of virus
-
like
particles expressed in yeast. Since 2002, the IBT was selected as EU Center
of Excellence in biotechnology (proj
ect BIOCEL, contract QLK3
-
CT
-
2002
-
30575). The IBT has been successful in providing an effective interface
between academic science and local biotech industry. Four new biotech spin
-
offs have been established on the basis of the activities of the Institute.

Now
these companies are well
-
known in local and international biotech market
(Fermentas UAB, Sicor Biotech UAB). Since 1999, more than 20
international RTD projects have been financed by European Commission
(12), NATO (1), Volkswagen Stiftung (2), Howard
Hughes Medical Institute
(4), EMBO (1), Max Plank Institute (1).

Key expertise offered

Development of recombinant viral proteins for vaccines and diagnostics.

Design of different expression systems in yeast, generation of recombinant
virus
-
like particle
s (VLPs), construction of chimeric VLPs harbouring
foreign epitopes. Immunogenicity studies of recombinant VLPs.
