What Problems Does Cisco Web Security Solve?
Organizations are exposed to tangible risks associated with web use:

Agile and deceptive web malware infections that disrupt operations and productivity

Brand damage and data loss through improper or uncontrolled web application use
Organizations face additional obstacles when it comes to web security:

Providing web security to new areas of the business that challenge traditional
security and deployment models, such as public Wi-Fi and bring your own device
(BYOD) trends, small remote offices, and mobile users

Reducing costs and complexity while extending the value of the existing
infrastructure—all without compromising security
The Best Web Security for Your Cisco Network
Cisco Web Security offers the best threat protection and most advanced control over
dynamic web content and applications for all users, regardless of location. It offers
the most flexible choices for deployment and is the only web security solution that
takes advantage of your existing Cisco infrastructure. All Cisco Web Security solutions
are market-leading in their own right, and the combination of security, deployment
flexibility, and network integration is unsurpassed.
Unmatched Malware Prevention
Cisco Security Intelligence Operations (SIO) powers all Cisco security products, including
Cisco Web Security. Relying on the expertise of more than 500 researchers and
engineers and analyzing data drawn from more than 1.6 million devices, 13 billion daily
web requests on 150 million endpoints, and more than 35% of the world’s email traffic,
Cisco SIO provides the most comprehensive real-time web security available today.

Brand and Data Protection
With its Application Visibility and Control Engine, Cisco Web Security gives
administrators granular control of hundreds of thousands of microapplications on
Facebook and Twitter, as well as many other popular platforms and streaming media.
Without blocking entire websites, administrators can allow or block specific features
such as chat, messaging, video, or audio. Dynamically updated controls allow
businesses to permit access to appropriate applications and content while preventing
the use of those that might increase risk, drain productivity, or be a potential loss of
confidential information.
As well as offering granular inbound web policy, Cisco Web Security enables an integrated
outbound policy to help prevent web-based leaks of confidential or personal data, which in
turn limits the potential exposure to bad press, lawsuits, and financial penalties.
Protection for All Users and Business Initiatives
Cisco Web Security provides remote workers, smartphone and tablet users, and BYOD
users with the same level of security as onsite employees using corporate assets.
Whether it’s providing access, preserving your brand, or protecting your public Wi-Fi
users, Cisco Web Security offers the deployment methods and flexibility you need to
support your operations.
Getting the Most from Your Cisco Network
The best way to enhance your investment in Cisco data centers, networks, and
branches is through integration with Cisco Web Security. All Cisco Web Security
solutions integrate with Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client to extend web
security to all users, connected or remote. You can easily redirect your web traffic
from existing ASA firewalls and ISR G2 routers to Cisco Cloud Web Security to provide
unmatched protection and control with no impact on network performance or your
datacenter footprint.

Cisco Web Security: FAQs
Q. How does Cisco Web Security work?
A:
Depending on your deployment method, Internet traffic is either redirected to the
Cisco Web Security service or routed through the Cisco Web Security Appliance
where it is scanned for malware and where user-based policy is enforced.
Real-time threat protection comes from Cisco Security Intelligence Operations (SIO),
which comprises numerous correlated detection technologies, automated machine-
learning heuristics, and multiple scanning engines.

Q: How do I choose the right deployment method for my organization?
A:
Numerous factors will affect your decision. For instance, the number and size of your
physical offices, the number of remote and mobile users, your network architecture,
any complexity reduction initiatives, and the size and distribution of your IT staff will
all play a part in your decision. Your Cisco [sales rep term] will help you design a
deployment that fits your security and business needs.

Q: You say that you provide “unmatched security and protection.” Isn’t that just
marketing hype?
A:
It’s not just us saying that. In fact, Cisco was named leader—again—in the Gartner
Secure Web Gateway Magic Quadrant for 2012.
The Cisco Web Security Appliance is the recognized market leader in the web
security appliance market, and the Cisco Web Security service is the clear market
leader in the web security market.
Q: Other vendors talk about their threat protection. What makes Cisco Web Security
so different?
A:
Cisco Web Security is proven, by our customers and by independent analyst firms,
to offer the best threat protection and most advanced control over dynamic web
content and applications for all users, regardless of location. It offers the most flexible
choices for deployment and is the only web security solution that takes advantage of
your existing Cisco infrastructure.

Q: How can Cisco Web Security help me protect my customers and preserve their
in-store experience while they are on my public Wi-Fi network?
A:
You can enable Cisco Web Security by routing traffic to our data centers via your
ASA firewall or ISR router. You set your policies for what is appropriate for your
customers to view while on your network, and Cisco Web Security handles the rest.
It will enforce your appropriate use policies, ensuring that no one sees objectionable
content while in your store, and will protect users from agile and deceptive malware
while they are on your network
.
Q:
Wouldn’t connecting to Cisco Web Security through my ASA firewalls or ISR routers
severely impact performance of those appliances?
A:

In contrast to UTM devices, where each security feature competes for system
resources, Cisco Web Security is integrated into Cisco ASA Software Release 9.0.
The antivirus and web security components are executed in the scalable Cisco Web
Security cloud, while the network security components are executed on the Cisco
ASA firewall. As a result, both services provide maximum security with little or no
performance impact.
