scope, complexity and schedule to the work required for the

The floodwall repair was located on the London Avenue Ca
nal
adjacent to Mirabeau Avenue. During construction Johnson Bros.
had to implement lane closures and traffic redirection. Johnson
Bros. utilized certified MOT supervisors and workforces to ensure
worker and community safety. These efforts were closely
mon
itored and performed with minimal impact to the surrounding
community. Because this project was constructed in an area of
existing hurricane protection Johnson Bros executed the demolition
of the old structure and constructed the new floodwall with
connect
ions to the existing floodwalls on the North and South
sides. Construction aided by the installation of the TRS system
required excavation and backfill in excess of 20,000 CY. Our 30 year
local presence and prior construction experience in the Louisiana
ar
ea provided expert comprehension of the unique soil
characteristics of the region. This expert knowledge proved to be a
valuable asset with the design and construction of the TRS as well
as the overall project.

This design was the first implementation of this type of whaler system
the Corps had seen.

Despite its unteste

was a vast success and
the TRS construction
was able to proceed with
minimal

impact to the
project schedule.



Another challenge and opportunity for Johnson Bros. to excel was
presented when it was determined that existing

unforeseen utilities
conflicted with the required TRS layout. Again, Johnson Bros. and team
presented a TRS design modification. This modification incorporated an
offset of the TRS Wall to avoid obstructing utilities. Through extensive
engineering efforts

we limited the offset to only 60’ in length as
opposed to the entire 400’ length of the system. This redesign proposal
