Local Study Task Guidance

The local study requires you to undertake research into the local provision and opportunities for
one of your chosen sports. The study s
hould describe and explain
grass
-
roots
provision and the
pathway up to the first leve
l of elite performance (eg. the pathway from under 7’s to senior 1
st

team)
available in your
sport in the
local area. In the study you have to cover the
three roles of
performer, coach

& official.

You have to cover the role played by schools

both primar
y and secondary

in developing skills
and
experience in your chosen sport and for the 3 roles mentioned above. You also have to
mention the role that ‘junior sections’ of senior clubs play in beginning to develop competitive
sport.

Schemes and programmes

run locally by the
National Governing Body

(NGB) for your chosen
sport should be described and their role in the pathway explained. There may be ‘partner
organisations’ that also contribute to the development of your sport in the local area as well as
var
ious funding agencies that may also help.

As briefly mentioned in paragraph 1 above, a key point is to give a detailed overview of a
participant’s pathways from grass roots programmes and schemes such as kwik cricket, high 5
netball & mini soccer to the
f
irst level of elite representation. This level refers to performers at
school or club level who have been chosen above others competing at the same level.
Usually this
will involve making it into the highest level of team that you can eg.
Senior

men’s’
/
wom
en’s’

1
st

team.
Make sure you explain clearly how the school and club structures support this development.
You will find that most of the information you gather will centre around performer pathways

you
can start with these and then search for a similar
pathway model for coach and official.

You must
also mention what the local provision is like for the disabled and if there are any gender issues that
affect the provision and access to your sport. Hopefully in this day and age, gender issues should
be very

rare.
