B
iotechnology uses the basic ingredients of life
to make new products. It is both a cutting-edge
technology and an applied science. Using a hands
on approach to science, Itineris Early College High
School students will work with DNA, proteins,
and cells in state of the art lab facilities. The early
college program is designed so that students can
achieve up to two years of college credit at the same
time as they are earning a high school diploma.

Biotechnology

E
xplore the cutting-edge science of biotechnology. And begin that exploration
with your studies at Itineris Early College High School.
When you think of biotechnology, think small.
Biotechnology uses living cells and materials
produced by cells to create products. People
have been using biotechnology for thousands
of years; for example, yeast - a biological
organism - to turn flour and water into bread
or grapes into wine. It comes from two words,
“bio” from biology, the science of living things,
and “technology” the tools and techniques
used to change or guide natural processes.
Benefits
of

Biotechnology
•Pharmaceuticals/Biochemistry
•Regeneration of muscle tissue/Bioengineering
•Protection against water and soil contaminants/Environmental
Science
•Disease resistant fruits and vegetables/Genetic Engineering
•Law Enforcement/Forensic Science
Biotechnology-derived products have the potential
to positively change our society; from improving
health care and increasing agricultural production
to producing
a cleaner
environment.
The
biotechnology
industry is
poised for
unprecedented
growth in the
next decade.
The year
2000 saw more money invested in biotechnology
companies than in the previous five years combined.
In 2002, revenues for the estimated 4,362
biotechnology companies worldwide grew by 15%
to $41.3 billion dollars.

iotechnology, like computer soft-

“Sometimes people ask me what field
I’d be in if not for computers. I think
I’d be working in biotechnology. I ex-
pect to see breathtaking advances in
medicine over the next two decades,
with biotechnology researchers and
companies at the center of that prog-
ress...the biotechnology industry is no
less important (than information tech-
nology) to the future of humankind.
It, too, will empower people and raise
the standard of living.”
