Traditional models of face
recognition usually concern themselves only with the
processing of faces as a constructed unit and assume that the visual elements within faces
are assembled by the same processes that dictate any other complex visual object.

Gelder & Rouw (2000) have proposed a dual route model that proposes a parallel
pathway specialised for faces

structural encoding of faces can preclude part
encoding and in prosopagnosic patients, even override the default route!
