Checkpoint 1, Project Site Review

Project Site:
www.hdcomputersinc.com

This project site is for High Desert Computers in Redmond, Oregon. They are a regroup and buyout
of
the old company PHD Computers. They had stores located in Bend and Redmond Oregon, the previous
owner decided it was time to move out of the market, at that point Jin and Henry decided to take over
the store and its business. At this point in time th
ey just have a place holder site in place just to have a
web presence for the business, it is lacking a lot of practical information and offered services. I have sat
down and reviewed many of the local area computer/IT firm sites and I can say almost all
of them are in
pretty bad shape. Personally I would question any company’s business ethic or service who doesn’t
have a strong we presence since about 70% of the computer/IT industry looks at service and products
offered over the internet. Her are a few
examples of the local web presence I have found for
computer/IT companies:

Redmond Computers.
this was actually one of the better sites I have
seen and would be the only company t
hat would offer High Desert Computers and competition unless
you visit their store directly.

Pros
-

This site is very clear and concise as to what they do, they have nice graphics and a good web
layout. They offer a lot of information on the front page
of the site and use really good bold letting to
make the services they offer stand out. All of the side menu item link to really good information. They
have a nice use of links to a lot of the industry needs.

Cons

Colors are a bit dark, the link to the
ir portfolio is empty so that to me says they have made an
effort to display their work or show the companies they have worked for. The News /Media has nothing
to do with news and media coverage of their business.
Under about us they display Business per
mit
that expired in 2010. The development of the website is a web form Joomla layout, which to me is a
cookie cutter web.

Doublee Computers.
This was also a good site to
look at, well
formatted and the layout is clean and clear as to what service they offer. They are based out of Bend
Oregon.

Pros

This site use a mix of layouts and has a lot of information right out in front of you making it very
clear as to what serv
ice they have to offer. They make good use of the website space the navigation bar
at the top has smooth transitions to each page that is
highlighted at the top. They put their business
address and phone number in large easy to see letters at the top of

the screen along with store hours.

Cons

The company logo leaves a lot to be desired, and title of the page up in the upper left of the page
is very simple and lacks creative accent. They have a static “Questions?” box in the lower right hand
corner w
hich in all the times I have been coming to this site has been offline and only offers you to leave
a message which is never answered, I know this out of personal experience. The “Questions?” box also
covers up important tags at the bottom of the page. Th
eir blog site is complete unused and not updated.

-

Alpine Computer Technology.
This was one of the worst sites I have
seen so far, there is no location or area of service. I
t wouldn’t be much of a challenge to upgrade this
site.

Pro

They did a nice job of making a good company logo, and they are keeping their pricing up to day as
of a short time ago. Beyond that I don’t find much else good about this site.

Cons

Poor choi
ces in coloring and over use of their logo, the logo is all over the page but very hard to
see. They don’t make use of the webpage space, they have a lot of open spacing. They linked a sound
effect to their products and pricing link in the right menu whi
ch is not only annoying but completely
worthless as far as the concerns to the page. They simply put out that they will not support certain
software that is still in use by some companies that are using the older software for custom made
applications they

still use. Not an impressive site.

http://www.dsicomputers.com/

-

DSI Computers. This is one of the longest standing computer shops in
the area. They have always been reliable and friendly as far back as I c
an remember.

Pros

The website is simple and a good layout, they have good use of colors to call out important
information/services they offer. They offer good services and have an amazon.com driven dropship
system to make orders from and buy product fro
m them directly if wanted. Pretty simple design and
upkeep.

Cons

No distinct menu system, pretty much a scroll and hope you see the CLICK HERE TO SHOP change
the icon as a link to their ordering system. They over use pictures even though they have so
me
revelance to the business and they repeated pictures on the main page. Finding the store address is a
bit of a chase for information because it’s in small print on the bottom of the page. They don’t offer any
pricing schedule for any of their services
.

-

Connecting Point Computers. This is probably the best
example I have seen for computer/IT services. This company is more MAC/Apple based and they
took
that into the design of their webpage trying to emulate the simple look of the Apple.com site.

Pros

They offer really nice sales and offers of service clear and concise. This is more of a corporate
website because it was made to support multiple lo
cations. They make good use of the web space and
offer all the information about the company store locations and hours. They have a really good
navigation menu on the top leading to all the store information and stock they carry. They make the site
easy

to navigate.

Cons

Their side bars are long and sometimes making scrolling down a long process. They put their
search tags on the sidebar extending it even further down the page. Other than that I was pretty
impressed by this site.

High Desert Comp
uter is a new startup company, they are picking up a mar
ket share in Redmond that
seriously needs to be filled. Pretty much any level of users can be serviced by HDC offering

friendly
reliable service put in to layman terms for those users who don’t alwa
ys understand all the terminology.

The old PHD site was removed and the place holder was put in place for HDC to help them let people
know that they didn’t lose their only reliable computer store and resource in the area, they also
forwarded any requests

for PHD computers to push them directly to the HDC website. A few things that
I would be looking for and would expect anyone looking for computers or IT service would be a direct
pricing schedule of what services they would offer. Next, I would like to
see what software they offer
and support when it comes to the services they sell. Main operating systems, Server software, anti
-
virus
software, seeing what they offer lets me know their affiliation to brands that I might know and like. I
would like to kn
ow about stock and inventory, what brand names they might carry as far as hardware
and components. Allowing me to see what they offer and have in
-
store might sway my decision to buy
somewhere else. Having a better layout than the web presence page

they h
ave now would definitely
put more confidence into a consumer to come into the store for products and services. Instituting a
nice company logo and well formatted page would also inspire confidence in a consumer. Offering
graphics and logos of supported

products like ATI Radeon, Microsoft, Antec would also give me an idea
of what products they offer for sale in store.
Finally I think recreating this site will offer them a lot more
business and a better digital presence.
