only thing that will remain constant!!

Awareness Watch™ Featured Report

This month’s featured report will be highlighting World Wide Web Reference
Resources on the Internet. These resources are constantly updated on the World Wide
Web Reference Subject Tracer™ Information Blog available at the following URL:

Finding the appropriate and critical resources on the Internet is one of the most important
tasks a layperson or researcher can accomplish and this August 2006 Awareness Watch
Featured Report list many of these free and fee based latest resources for world wide web
reference sources available on the Internet. These resources are constantly being updated
so it would be wise to bookmark this resource and return on a regular basis.

WAVE 3.5 Accessibility Tool (development version)

Disabilities. This has been added to
Accessibility Resources
Subject Tracer™
Information Blog.

Bite Size Standards
http://www.bitesizestandards.com/

Bite Size Standards offers concise web development tutorials, tips and tricks written by
designers and developers who are passionate about web standards. Bite Size Standards
was conceived by John Oxton in 2005. Busy web designers don’t always have time to
read or write lengthy tutorials, but a daily “bite” of useful information, taken or given,
could be good for the soul. Early in 2006 he gathered a small team of experts who—with
little to no help from John—brought this multi-author blogging experiment to life. This
has been added to
World Wide Web Reference
Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

Disability INFormation Resources (DINF)
http://www.dinf.ne.jp/doc/english/index_e.html

The aim of DINF is to provide an information resource for supporting the study of health
and welfare topics for people with disabilities. The information is collected from many
Japanese and international sources. There is a special emphasis on the role technologies
can play in improving access to information for disabled persons. The following
resources are available: 1) Reports and papers from Japanese administrative authorities,
associations of people with disabilities and researchers. (only in Japanese), 2)
Documents, laws and regulations of the UN and other international organizations and
information from international NGO's (Non-Governmental Organizations) such as the

Japanese), 3) Information and proceedings from international conferences related to
disabilities, 4) Information on web accessibility for people with disabilities, and 5)
Documents and papers about people with disabilities in the Asia-Pacific areas through
UNESCAP(United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific).
A full-text search engine is incorporated in the web site and allows keyword searching of
all documents in DINF. This has been added to

ZK - Simply Rich Open Source Ajax Framework
http://zk1.sourceforge.net/

ZK is an open-source Ajax Web framework that enables rich UI for Web applications
with no JavaScript and little programming. With event-driven feature-rich components,
developing becomes as simple as programming desktops. With a markup language,
designing becomes as simple as authoring HTML. This has been added to
World Wide
Web Reference
Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

FILExt - Database of File Extensions
http://filext.com/

FILExt is a database of file extensions and the various programs that use them. If you
know the file extension you want to learn about simply enter it into the search box on the
left and click on the Search button. If it's in any of the FILExt databases the data we have
on that file extension will be shown on a results page. If it's not in any of the databases
you will be given a link to a page with hints on how to do further research. Don't search
on terms; just file extensions and only one at a time please. There will be another search
box on the results page if you have multiple searches to do. It's possible that the search
will give you multiple results as there is no central registry for file extensions. If so, you
will have some detective work to do; read the results page carefully as there will be hints
on how to do this detective work. This has been added to

Community Patent Project
http://dotank.nyls.edu/communitypatent/

Sponsored by IBM, the Community Patent Project seeks to create a peer review system
for patents that exploits network technology to enable innovation experts to inform the
patent examination procedure. In every field of scientific endeavor, peer review is a
critical quality control mechanism to improve innovation. Throughout the public sector
both peer review and citizen consultation are either legally mandated or practiced as a
way to inform policymaking. The Community Patent Project aims to design and pilot an
online system for peer review of patents. The Community Patent system will support a
network of experts to advise the Patent Office on prior art as well as to assist with
patentability determinations. By using social software, such as social reputation,
collaborative filtering and information visualization tools, they can apply the “wisdom of
the crowd” – or, more accurately the wisdom of the experts – to complex social and
scientific problems. This could make it easier to protect the inventor’s investment while
safeguarding the marketplace of ideas. This has been added to

Jatalla Search Engine

Conventional search engines rely upon computers to rank the relevance of web pages to
search terms. Several different ranking methodologies are used: counting the number of
links to a given web page or counting the number of occurrences of a particular term in a
page, for example. By contrast, Jatalla relies only upon relevance rankings performed
personally by actual human beings. You and people like you are literally the ranking

Most books are aimed at undergraduates, but there are at least a few resources at every

Numeria - The Clearest View of a Firm's Value
http://www.numeria.com/

Numeriasm provides the clearest view of a firm’s value through a private stock
exchange-like process. Numeria uses multiple experts who independently analyze the
firm and then submit their valuation opinions, which together form a rich data set that
reveals the fair market value of the business. They include investment bankers, financial
advisors, corporate development officers and appraisers, whose expertise is delivered
without bias. Before a firm is valued, key company information is compiled and
distributed to the participating analysts, who then conduct their own research and pose
questions to management in scheduled pre-pricing conference calls. The analysts then
independently prepare and submit written valuation opinions, which are posted in the
market before pricing begins. These initial valuations can range widely, showing clearly
that a group of independent experts starting with the same information can reach very
different conclusions. They call this Wild Card Risksm and it reveals the risk of relying
on just one valuation analysis. Once the initial opinions are posted in the virtual
marketplace, all of the analysts convene with a Numeria market maker to thoroughly vet
each others’ valuations in a transparent, unscripted and colorful debate about the true fair
market value of the company. As the analysts learn more about the others’ work and
points-of-view, they change their valuation opinions by submitting new prices to the
market. This allows all relevant information about the company to be reflected in the
valuation. This has been added to

PVM: Parallel Virtual Machine
http://www.csm.ornl.gov/pvm/

PVM (Parallel Virtual Machine) is a software package that permits a heterogeneous
collection of Unix and/or Windows computers hooked together by a network to be used
as a single large parallel computer. Thus large computational problems can be solved
more cost effectively by using the aggregate power and memory of many computers. The
software is very portable. The source, which is available free thru netlib, has been
compiled on everything from laptops to CRAYs. PVM enables users to exploit their
existing computer hardware to solve much larger problems at minimal additional cost.
Hundreds of sites around the world are using PVM to solve important scientific,
industrial, and medical problems in addition to PVM's use as an educational tool to teach
parallel programming. With tens of thousands of users, PVM has become the de facto

eAccelerator - Free Open-source PHP Accelerator, Optimizer, Encoder and
Dynamic Content Cache
http://eaccelerator.net/

eAccelerator is a free open-source PHP accelerator, optimizer, encoder and dynamic
content cache. It increases the performance of PHP scripts by caching them in their
compiled state, so that the overhead of compiling is almost completely eliminated. It also
optimizes scripts to speed up their execution. eAccelerator typically reduces server load
and increases the speed of your PHP code by 1-10 times. eAccelerator was born in
December 2004 as a fork of the Turck MMCache project. Turck MMCache was created
by Dmitry Stogov and much of the eAccelerator code is still based on his work.
eAccelerator stores compiled PHP scripts in shared memory and executes code directly
from it. It creates locks only for a short time, while searching for a compiled PHP script
in the cache, so one script can be executed simultaneously by several engines. Files that
can't fit in shared memory are cached on disk only. This has been added to

as: a) What causes people to believe (or not believe) what they find on the Web?, b) What
strategies do users employ in evaluating the credibility of online sources?, c) What
contextual and design factors influence these assessments and strategies?, and d) How
and why are credibility evaluation processes on the Web different from those made in

Standpedia is wiki-style encyclopedia of controversy. It's a place where tough questions
are answered from a variety of perspectives, instead of a single 'neutral point of view'.
Standpedia users work together to build maps of controversial issues that everyone can
agree on -- not because the map offers one right answer but because all the perspectives
are well-represented within the map. Standpedia is part of Standpoint, an on-going online
experiment in social belief management. This has been aded to

mnemomap - Search Engine
http://www.mnemo.org/

mnemomap is a new way to search the internet. It combines technologies of social
networking, search engines and other data sources to help you formulate search queries
and find really relevant information. Today’s search engines have some common flaws:
Though easy to use, they hardly deliver any concept to assist the user in finding relevant
information. They are somewhat straight-forward: give a word, get a list. mnemomap can
do better: in an interactive way they help the user to refine search queries by providing
alternative or additional search parameters on-the-fly. By providing tags, translations and
many other data sources to find words they help formulating a search query that delivers
better results. And finally: they show live search results. You won’t have to wonder
whether you’re using the right words in queries. The live feedback enables you to see it
realtime! This has been added to the tools section of

Bio Mapping
http://biomapping.net/

Bio Mapping is a research project which explores new ways that we as individuals can
make use of the information we can gather about our own bodies. Instead of security
technologies that are designed to control our behaviour, this project envisages new tools
that allows people to selectively share and interpret their own bio data. The Bio Mapping
tool allows the wearer to record their Galvanic Skin Response (GSR), which is a simple
indicator of emotional arousal in conjunction with their geographical location. This can
be used to plot a map that highlights point of high and low arousal. By sharing this data
we can construct maps that visualise where we as a community feel stressed and excited.

KSJ Tracker
http://ksjtracker.mit.edu/

KSJ Tracker is a new service for science journalists, created and funded by the Knight
Science Journalism Fellowship Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
They believe that if science reporters and editors have convenient and timely access to
the work of peers across the country, they can better evaluate and improve their own
performance. Their goal is to provide a broad sampling of the past day’s science news
and, where possible, of news releases or other news tips related to publication of science
news in the general circulation news media, mainly of the U.S. Their goal is to have a
new batch of posts up each day by 1 pm Eastern time. KSJ Tracker ordinarily includes
brief descriptions of news stories with occasional commentary, headlines and links to
their publishers’ Web sites—some of which require registration to gain access. Priority
goes to stories that report or analyze new scientific research, and to reports on science
policy and issues. Less attention is given to brief reports and updates that add little to
what has already been in the news. This has been added to the tools section of

JSON (JavaScript Object Notation)
http://www.json.org/

JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is a lightweight data-interchange format. It is easy for
humans to read and write. It is easy for machines to parse and generate. It is based on a
subset of the JavaScript Programming Language, Standard ECMA-262 3rd Edition -
December 1999. JSON is a text format that is completely language independent but uses
conventions that are familiar to programmers of the C-family of languages, including C,
C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Perl, Python, and many others. These properties make JSON
an ideal data-interchange language. JSON is built on two structures: a) A collection of
name/value pairs. In various languages, this is realized as an object, record, struct,
dictionary, hash table, keyed list, or associative array, and b) An ordered list of values. In
most languages, this is realized as an array, vector, list, or sequence. These are universal
data structures. Virtually all modern programming languages support them in one form or
another. It makes sense that a data format that is interchangable with programming
languages also be based on these structures. This has been added to

Robots.Txt Checker - Validator for Robots.txt Files
http://tool.motoricerca.info/robots-checker.phtml

Robots.txt files (often erroneously called robot.txt, in singular) are created by webmasters
to mark (disallow) files and directories of a web site that search engine spiders (and other
types of robots) should not access. This robots.txt checker is a "validator" that analyzes
the syntax of a robots.txt file to see if its format is valid as established by Robot
Exclusion Standard (please read the documentation and the tutorial to learn the basics) or
if it contains errors. This has been added to

One's doctoral advisor is one's academic parent. This lets us define an academic

have more than one, so the genealogical lattice branches both forward and backward in
time. They propose to build an academic genealogy for the field of Artificial Intelligence.

Awareness Watch™ Paper Review

A Case for Open Markets In Education by Steve Midgley
http://www.firstmonday.org/issues/issue11_7/midgley/index.html

Abstract:
This paper outlines a new approach, based on existing research, experience and practice,
to improve public education and educational equity by making more effective
technological systems for education available. It argues that effective administrative and
educational data systems are essential to support widespread educational reform. These
systems can best be sustained and developed within a competitive marketplace using
open and closed source tools combined with open communities of practice and expertise.
These innovations can help to ensure that such markets, tools and communities can
evolve to support a very large number of districts undertaking comprehensive
organizational reform.
