Introduction




Ringdale’s Uniport uses the latest in fingerprint and face recognition technology to provide a
fast and effective way to enrol staff and visitors. The adaptable system can be used as an
electronic visitors book, using biometrics
instead of the normal pen and ink to register guests,
log their arrival and departure, as well as providing a highly secure time and attendance
system for staff.


The UniPort software is installed on a Windows PC, and the supplied USB fingerprint reader
an
d optional camera (used for face recognition) are connected to it. To further enhance the
functionality of UniPort, a touch panel display can also be attached if required.


The system can operate on a stand
-
alone PC, or over a network and can use SQL or
Microsoft Access databases (Access does not need to be installed on the PC, all required
elements are installed with UniPort).


This manual details the simple installation and configuration procedures required to get the
UniPort system running, together wi
th instructions for the enrolment of users and successful
operation.

Installation




The PC running the UniPort system will require the following specification:


Windows NT4/2000/XP Platform

32 bit PC running TCP/IP

A minimum of two USB ports


The follow
ing minimum specification is also recommended:


1.5 GHz processor

256 Mb memory



Fingerprint Reader and Camera Installation


Both the fingerprint reader and the camera (optional) connect to the USB ports on the PC.


Install the fingerprint reader and cam
era in a convenient position.
Note:

it is recommended
that the maximum length of cable used between reader/camera and the PC be 10 metres (33
feet). This is 2 active USB repeater cables of 5 metres (16.5 feet).


Ensure that the fingerprint reader, camera

and their drivers are installed before
installing the UniPort software.


The camera driver will be contained on the separate CD included in the camera’s packaging.

Reboot the PC after the drivers are installed.




UniPort Installation


Note:

Ensure the PC has been rebooted after the fingerprint driver installation before
attempting to install UniPort.


The U
niPort software is found on the UniPort CD. Insert the CD into the PCs CD drive and
use
Windows Explorer

to locate the file. This will be called:


Uni
-
PortVxxx.msi


Double click on the icon and follow the on
-
screen instructions to complete the installat
ion.

Configuration



Accessing the Menu Options


Open UniPort from the
Start

menu of your Windows application using the following path:


Start/Programs/Ringdale/UniPort


The UniPort menu options are hidden by default. To access them click in the top r
ight corner
of the UniPort window, as shown below:




It might be necessary to click several times, moving the mouse slightly each time until the
exact location of the hidden button is found. The menu bar will appear at the top of the
window, as shown in

the example below:




Before UniPort can be used it will need to be licensed.



UniPort Authorization


To license this copy of UniPort, select License Information from the Help menu. This will
display the following dialog box:




Copy the
Request Key
,
and paste it into an e
-
mail clearly stating the license is for UniPort.
Send the e
-
mail to
support@ringdale.com
.

Upon receipt, Ringdale will generate a license key for that code and send it to you. Copy the
key

onto your clipboard and in the above
License Information

dialog box click the
Enter
License

button. Paste the code into the
License Key

field. Click the
Activate License

button. A message will state that Uniport has been successfully authorized for use
.



Additional Configuration


Once UniPort has been authorized it is ready to go. However, the default setting for the
application is to use a Microsoft Access database directly on the PC running Uniport (it is not
necessary to have Access installed on t
he PC, all required components will have been
installed with UniPort). If this is the required configuration, proceed to the next chapter.


If the SQL database option is to be used, or the location of the database needs to be on a
remote PC, additional co
nfiguration will be required. It is also possible to incorporate UniPort
into Ringdale’s FaceKey biometric system if required.



Associating UniPort to a SQL Database


From the
Settings

drop
-
down menu, select
Database

and then
Locate Database
. Select
SQL

Server

to display the following page:




Enter the SQL details into the relevant fields (this information will be supplied by your
SQL/Database administrator).


Click the
Apply

Button, then click the
Test

button.

Note:

A dialog box might ask if the new
settings should be used. Click
Yes

again and then click
OK
. The connection can be checked
at any time by clicking the
Test
button. Click
OK

to exit the
Database Settings
window.


NOTE: If not using SQL then the default Access database settings should not
be altered.



Associating UniPort with a FaceKey System


If the FaceKey Control Centre (Admin) tool is available, UniPort can be configured to
communicate with it. This will act as a server and maintain a central database which will be
synchronized to all
connected UniPort systems. When users are enrolled using UniPort this
information will be sent to the central database and the Server tool will keep all connected
units up to date. For more information on using the Server tool refer to the separate manual.

To configure the Server, from the
Settings

drop
-
down menu select the
Server Settings

option to display the following dialog box:




The default set
Server Name / IP Address

will be 127.0.0.1. (This means that the server is
on the same PC that is runnin
g the software). If you wish to connect to a server on a remote
system enter into this field the IP address of the PC that is running the FaceKey Control
Centre software.


The default set
Server Port

is 9110. This will need to be changed to match the ser
ver port
that the FaceKey software is using (this also uses the default port of 9110 so will usually not
need to be changed).


The Unit Name is the name which will be displayed in the Server Unit Manager window. If
connecting several UniPort systems Each U
nit Name should be changed to uniquely identify
the systems.


Click
OK

to exit this dialog box.


If the Facekey software is running then this should now report that the UniPort system is
connected, and will proceed to synchronize the database. This may tak
e a few minutes.


Hiding the UniPort Drop
-
Down Menu


Once any configuration changes have been made, the drop
-
down menu can be hidden again.


From the
View

menu select
Hide Menu
. The menu will disappear. To re
-
open the menu
follow the same procedure as de
scribed at the start of the chapter.

Enrolment of Users



There are two types of enrolment available with UniPort, registering visitors and registering
employees. Whether both need to be used or not will depend on how UniPort is being used
for each indi
vidual installation. UniPort is designed for intuitive enrolment, so users are able
to be enroled/enrol themselves without referring to instructions during the procedures.


Additional enrolment procedures are required if the optional camera and face recog
nition
option is being used.


To start enrolment, click on the Self Enrolment button on the UniPort main screen, as shown
below:




This will display a menu of three buttons, as shown below:





New Employee Enrolment


Click this button to display the fo
llowing dialog box:

This option is for using UniPort as a time and attendance system. Enter the name and
address for the employee and any other information that is required. Select the gender of the
employee and click
OK
.



New Visitor Enrolment

ck this button to display the following dialog box:




Use this option to register visitors when they arrive. Users entered as visitors are stored in a
separate group within the database, but their details will be held permanently, so once a
regular visi
tor has been enroled, UniPort will recognize them the next time they arrive.
Effectively they will be able to clock in and out as an employee would.


Details that can be entered here for a visitor include name, the company they represent, the
registration
/license plate number of their vehicle, and details of the people or departments
they are visiting. Select a gender and click the
OK

button.



Changing the Details of an Existing User


Click this button to display the following window:




This window wil
l list all users that are enroled in the UniPort database. Select this option to
change or update the
Biometric Information

for any user (for example, to enrol a new finger

if the current registered finger has been cut and can no longer be recognized). B
oth
employees and visitors will be listed here.


Scroll down the list to find the user required, or (for use with a high volume of users) use the
search facility above. Entering an A into the
Enter Username

field will immediately pull out
only those surna
mes beginning with A. Entering the full name will display only that name.


Select the name from the list and click the
OK

button to open up the biometric enrolment

windows for that user (what is displayed will depend on the biometric options that are bein
g
used


fingerprint, face recognition or both). Make any changes as required.


Following are the procedures for enrolment of both fingerprints and faces.



Registering a Fingerprint for a User


Note: When registering a fingerprint it is necessary to appl
y the finger to the reader
four times, allowing the software to learn to recognise each finger
(if any difficulties are
encountered with this procedure, please read the
General Advice for Fingerprint
Registration

section below
).


If a fingerprint reader is

fitted to the PC, the following enrolment window will open after the
user details have been completed (if changing the details of an existing user, this window will
appear as soon as the user is selected from the list):




Click the
Enrol Fingers

button
to display the following window:




Click on the button for the finger that is to be registered. UniPort will confirm which finger has
been selected and will then display the message:


Please Apply Your Finger Until you Hear a Beep

Place the required fi
nger onto the fingerprint reader. An image of the the fingerprint will be
shown on the screen together with the following message:




Repeat the finger application a further three times, following the on
-
screen prompts. At any
time during the procedure
the registration can be stopped by clicking the
Stop Enrolment

button.


Note:

If the application of the fingerprint is unsuccessful (for example if the finger slips as it
contacts the sensor, producing a blurred image), UniPort will automatically ask for

the finger
to be presented again. In this situation the finger would have to be presented five times
instead of four to complete a successful registration.


When the process is complete the following message will be displayed:





General Advice for Fi
ngerprint Registration


Following are some tips to help achieve the most successful and reliable fingerprint
registration:


a)

The more meticulous the approach taken with this procedure the clearer and sharper the
image will be. The stronger the quality o
f data that is stored, the more reliable and consistent
will be the recognition of the user (the actual fingerprint is not stored, only points of reference
from it). Below are some tips to help achieve this:


i

Ensure the fingerprint sensor is clean (use
a soft, dry cloth) before starting and that it
is regularly wiped (especially if users have particularly oily hands).


ii

Users should have clean hands prior to the start of the procedure.


iii

The fingerprint should cover as much of the sensor as possibl
e. Place finger directly
on the sensor without sliding across the surface.


b)

It is recommended that each individual registers two or three fingers. There will then be a
backup print that can be used in the event of one of the fingerprints becomes temp
orarily or
permanently altered (for example by a paper cut or minor burn).
