Strangers in the Night:
Knowledge Management
and Health Charities

KM Network Presentation

February 2005

Sandra Bell, Director of Programs

Can KM and the KFoC be more
than strangers in the night?

We’re intrigued with each other,

but can we have a meaningful

and long
-
term relationship?

Discussion question:

How can knowledge management
help the Kidney Foundation?

The Kidney Foundation of Canada is the national
volunteer organization committed to reducing the
burden of kidney disease through:

funding and stimulating innovative research;

providing education and support;

promoting access to high quality healthcare;
and,

increasing public awareness and commitment to
advancing kidney health and organ donation.

Dual formal hierarchy: Staff and Volunteer

Internal (local) and external (national) hierarchies

Some elements of formal and informal matrix structure

Few long term volunteers, most at policy (board) level

Many episodic volunteers, especially in fundraising

Barriers

No or tiny IT budgets

Mindset: “We have no money.”

No training policy

Resistance (fear?) to change

No national champion

Us vs. them (other branches, head office)
mentality

Final question:

What would it take to get a
KM person like you to volunteer
for an organization like mine?

Thank you!
