Commentary

The markets had opened on a positive note tracking mixed
to positive cues from the global markets and slipped from
there every minute slowly and witnessing a major downside
in the later part of the day on Asian cues and finally came
to a close near to the lowest point of the day. In the Asian
were trading in green as Japanese banks rose on brokerage
upgrades and also Chinese stock futures rose on banks
measures to curb inflation and foreign inflows. But later in
the day we saw South Korean stocks plunging in the late
hour of trade as the expiration of options contracts which
triggered the largest ever sales of equities by foreign
investors. The Moody’s Investors Service raised China’s
debt rating to its fourth highest ranking quoting the nation’s
financial strength. Adding more to the negativity, Australian
unemployment rate rose unexpectedly in October to 5.4%
from 5.1% last month. European markets were down with
selling seen in technology and banking sector stocks. The
below expected earnings forecast of Cisco was one of the
reason for the selling in technology stocks. The US index
futures were down from the morning itself indicating a weak
opening for DOW. In the domestic front, the PowerGrid
FPO was subscribed around 8.53 times at the end of the
trading session. Selling pressure was seen across the board
with Realty, Oil, Technology and PSU being the major
laggards. The food price index rose 12.3% while the fuel
price index rose 10.67% as per the day released today.
Finally our markets came to a close with Sensex down
1.37% and Nifty down 1.3%. Commodities remained the
major attraction with commodity prices surging. Investors
seem to have considered commodities a good avenue of
investment for the time being compared to equities. Gold
prices climbed back again with silver following it. Copper
was down in the morning, rose to a new record high after
Chinese inflation showed no sign of cooling down. Also
there was news that copper output in China dropped as high
price and increased supply have reduced consumption. This
profit taking is expected to continue with Nifty having
support at 6161 and if it falls below this level then further
selling can be seen. On the other hand Nifty has resistance
at 6243 and 6307 levels.
About 1571 shares advanced while
1570 shares declined on BSE. Nearly 308 shares were
unchanged.
