REPORT from SFCC Institutional Research

Distance Learning Faculty

Survey

Spring 2008

Katie Freed

June 9
, 2008

Methodology:

During Spring 2008 an email was sent out to the SFCC Faculty asking them to
participate in a brief online survey. The purpose o
f the survey was to get a better understanding
of how the Distance Learning (DL) Office
can serve the SFCC f
aculty. There were 88 responses to
the survey.

27% of the respondents reported having used the tutorials provided on the faculty web site;
96% of those respondents reported that the tutorials were helpful.

SFCC faculty suggestions for improving tutorials provided on the
faculty web site were:

Easier to find from Intranet.

More separate links that we can insert into our classes...

Training

Almost half (49%) of the SFCC faculty reported that one on one training that they request as
needed wor

Additional training that SFCC Faculty are interested in this year:

Angel training

Any Office 2007 that is beyond the basics.

At this point, a general

overview and then more detail, such as all of the things that the
grade

book can do and how they could be used.

How to

set up groups on
Blackboard

I'd like to use
Blackboard

more to involve my students in their class but I'm not sure how it
fits into my subject area, math.

I can't think of anything

I had some training in Tegrity at SCC, but I could use a refresher.

I have
n't found a way to utilize distance learning techniques in my current classes.

I need access to visual aids: video streaming, pod casting (how do we do this?) I think I had
to miss this training.

I need help setting up multiple
-
choice tests for online acce
ss and grading.

I need to do more training with
Blackboard

and auto web.

I received an
excellent

one
-
on
-
one session but haven't been able to implement yet. Will
probably need to meet again to get it going. Too busy with curriculum development to use
righ
t now.

I think there are a lot of features on
Blackboard

that are not covered in "Dummies" but that
are buried so deep in the tutorial structure that few people access. If we could call an
informal BB club/roundtable with lots of booze and fairly open str
ucture, I think we could
probably learn from each other.

I would like to learn more about all the new resources that are available

I would like to see a set time for intro to online and
Blackboard

so that I can recommend to
faculty.

More training is needed for students to feel comfortable with online.

Developing and online course.

I'm not sure, but the training times
have not seemed to fit with my schedule. That's why I
thought some type of online training might work better with my schedule.

I don't have the time during the quarter to learn how to use
Blackboard

to the best
advantage. I may go through the online tutor
ials this summer on my own and ask for help if
there is something I don't understand.

I have had some experience with
Blackboard

as a student and as an adjunct instructor at
Whitworth, but time has passed so I am just trying to remember things. It might b
e nice to
see a comparison of what the instructor views and what the student sees.

I need to take a class where I sit and watch you introduce how to use advanced features. I
don't take time on my own.

I would like just more practice sessions as I do enjoy
the information I get, but my time
doesn't always work for them. As another approach, I use the one

on
-
one because I know I
will get my individual questions answered.

It feels like my retention rate in online classes is much lower than on ground. What

Additional Comments

Suggested ways to improve the Distance Learning Office:

Check
-
up phone calls.

Find new platform
-

Blackboard

is down frequently.

I have used Bb a great deal at another college. I'd like to use it here as well, but

it seems
there's a lot of duplication. For example, there are the class folders and the instructor web
sites where materials can be posted, dropped off, etc. I also don't like the fact that the Bb
grading program will not automatically drop the lowest gra
de in any particular category. I
end up having to use a separate grading program which makes me not want to use the
other features of Bb.

I wish that
Blackboard

ITSELF was a more stable enviro
n
ment.

Just keep doing what you are doing!

Keep Kyla and Rosie.
They are helpful,
knowledgeable

and patient.

Maybe just send out periodic helpful tips. It's hard to find time to attend
training
, but if a
brief email message came through with a quick idea, or a link to more extensive tutorials,
I might be more able to
access the information.

More interaction/communication with those who teach online.

Take the past classes off of the list of classes. Think I have at least 25 classes listed. It is
very messy and I wish I knew how to remove these myself. thanks

We need the pencil icon back. I also need to
know

how to set
grade book

with a current
percentage, but to be honest, I haven't tried to look it up in Bb for Dummies yet. It is
probably there. Thanks for the work you do.

When classes are copied
-

There are a lot of problems when course are copied. It r
equires
a great deal of work on the instructors end to go into each class and sort out the mess
that is created when things are copied, sometimes multiple times as the courses are
sometimes copies more than once. If we could get this figured out it would
save me a lot
of time. Class shells should be able to be copied over without having to go back and
look/fix each folder, assignment, discussion board, etc. as things can be in the wrong
order, discussion boards all copied into one, etc.

You all do a smash
ing good job.
