What is Novell intraNetWare?
intraNetWare is an operating system that continues the evolution of NetWare into a full-service intranet/Internet access platform, with scalability for
businesses of all sizes. The same distributed networking services, including robust directory services and file/print capability, that NetWare delivers are
incorporated into intraNetWare.
intraNetWare includes the NetWare 4.11 operating system and a number of intranet components for optional installation. The intranet products licensed
under intraNetWare are: Novell Web Server, MultiProtocol Router with WAN Extensions, IPX/IP Gateway, File Transfer Protocol (FTP) Services, and Netscape
Navigator browsers for each client.

Low Total Cost of Ownership

Low Total Cost of Ownership
Compaq servers and intraNetWare together deliver a low cost of ownership over the total life of your network. SmartStart integrates intraNetWare optimized
device drivers, and performance-tunes NOS parameters for proven superior performance in intranet, file/print and applications environments while greatly
reducing the time your network administrator spends planning, configuring, installing and tuning servers.
The intraNetWare architecture is designed to run on Intel-based servers, using less memory and less disk space than other operating environments, reducing
server hardware costs. Multiple applications and thousands of user connections are supported on a single intraNetWare server, enabling cost-saving server
consolidation. Novell Directory Services (NDS) reduces management and administration costs by delivering central, hierarchical management with an easy-
to-use graphical interface and inter-operability with other management tools.
Full-Service Intranet Platform

Full-Service Intranet Platform
intraNetWare adds newly integrated intranet functionality to NetWare 4.11 to create a full-service platform for intranet/Internet environment. Novell Web
Server provides a high-performance web server platform with support for Java scripts, Java applets, Remote and Local Common Gateway interfaces. MPR
supports a high-speed, wide-area connection within the corporate intranet, or externally to Internet Service Providers, without the expense of configuring and
maintaining a hardware router.
The IPX/IP Gateway delivers a single IP address for each intranet server, but not for other IPX servers and clients on the LAN, creating a firewall that protects
workstations and IPX servers from potential Internet intruders. FTP Services support industry-standard access to files by other Intranet or Internet users,
facilitating access to the most current information, and provide Domain Naming System (DNS) capability.
Netscape Navigator web browsers deliver leading-edge intranet/Internet access to all clients on the network. Novell Web Server delivers high-performance
web publishing and access, Java applet support, and scalability features that improve service of multimedia web pages.

High-Performance, High-Availability
Compaq servers were used in the intraNetWare development process, allowing Compaq to deliver performance tuned server/NOS configurations and
optimized device drivers on SmartStart. The integration feature of SmartStart delivers years of Compaq engineering experience to further tune your
server automatically during the configuration and installation process. intraNetWare builds on the high-speed file transfer design of prior NetWare versions
to deliver unmatched file/print services that also translate into superior intranet/Internet performance.
High-availability features of Compaq servers, like hot plug disk drives, PCI Hot Plug, disk array controllers, redundant power supplies, dual-peer PCI buses,
and Automatic Server Recovery-2 deliver the robust, fault-preventative platform you need for business-critical processes in the intraNetWare environment. The
Compaq Standby Recover Server Option supports hardware fault tolerance by configuring one intraNetWare server as an off-line replacement for the primary
intraNetWare server.
In the multi-processing environment, intraNetWare SMP boosts transaction processing performance for Oracle databases, equaling performance of Windows
NT 4.0 using the same hardware/database configuration. The synergy of high-performance file/print capability, Novell Web Server and intraNetWare SMP
translates into superior intranet performance, as demonstrated in the results of independent Webstone benchmarks.
Manageability
ManageabilityManageability
Manageability
intraNetWare administrators can enhance their control over the entire network environment by using Compaq Insight Manager. Insight Manager provides
visibility into the server hardware environment, tracking over 1,200 server parameters and facilitating fault prevention, regular maintenance, and proactive
resource planning.
NDS manages all the resources on a LAN or WAN including servers, users, peripherals, and connections from a single management console. Through NDS,
users have a single point for logging into all servers, applications, and other resources on the intraNetWare network.

Compaq SmartStart
Compaq SmartStart is an integration tool that configures Compaq hardware and prepares it for software installation. Customers can benefit from SmartStart,
regardless of where their operating systems were purchased.
The fully assisted integration features of SmartStart provide a performance-optimized installation for the operating system components of intraNetWare,
intraNetWare SMP, and Novell Web Server. You may choose to install intranet components from the Integration Maintenance Utility, including the
MultiProtocol Router, IPX/IP Gateway, FTP Services, and Netscape Navigator browsers. All components of intraNetWare are fully tested for compatibility and
inter-operability on Compaq servers.
In addition, Compaq Insight Manager delivers a robust environment for managing intraNetWare servers, including Pre-Failure warnings for processors, disk
drives and memory.
