The Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries (CCRF) supports an
d is highly instrumental to effective fisheries
management and sustainable aquaculture development, contributing to the conservation of aquatic biodiversity and the
health and productivity of ecosystems and their fishery resources and fisheries production.

The implementation of the
CCRF is based on the holistic and multidisciplinary approach to fisheries and aquaculture systems including the FAO
-
promoted Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries (EAF) and to Ecosystem Approach to Aquaculture (EAA). This
Operational O
utput aims to improving national and regional policy development and implementation of the CCRF and
its technical guidelines in the RNE region, with particular attention to shared stock fisheries management, small
-
scale
fisheries and aquaculture sustainabl
e development, IUU fishing and EAF/EAA implementation also as means to cope
with emerging issues.

Forest
Assessment,
Management and
Conservation Division

Forests in the arid zones are an extremely important but undervalued resource. They have significant roles in
biodiv
ersity conservation, providing habitat and essential ecosystem goods (such as fodder for livestock, fuel wood,
wood, medicines and herbs, tradeable goods such as resins, gums and cork) as well as services (such as soil
stabilization, water, erosion and des
ertification control). Their role in climate change mitigation and adaptation is also
important as the sustained provision of these ecosystems' goods and services will help people to adapt to hardship under
a changing climate. However, despite their value,

these forests are caught in a spiral of deforestation, fragmentation,
degradation and desertification. These dynamics are driven by interrelated factors, including climate change, policy and
socio
-
economic factors. Also contributing to the scenario are te
chnical aspects as well as a general lack of
understanding of the importance and vulnerability of these systems and, consequently, a lack of investment in their
protection, sustainable management and restoration. FAO, together with partners
-

forest relate
d government bodies,
international, regional and national organizations, CPF members, local communities and authorities, NGOs, research
institutions and networks
-

is working to: Raise awareness of the importance of arid zone forests and their contribution

to food security in drylands; Mobilize appropriate partnerships for conservation, enhancement and restoration of the
social, economic and environmental values of drylands forests; Support the development of necessary technical
capacity for the sustainable

forest management, restoration of degraded lands and combating desertification in drylands;
Enhance collaboration and dialogue with a wide range of partners and actors and countries through the organization of
events and workshops; Facilitate the developm
ent of programmes and projects and support their implementation for
restoration of drylands.

Regional Office
for the Near East and
North Africa (Cairo)

The availability of reliable and timely information on household food and nutrition security in the countries of the Near

East is essential in assisting policy makers decide on their food, agriculture, health, and social welfare policies. This
need has been particularly highlighted in the context of the successive crises the world has witnessed (Food, Fuel,
Financial). Some
countries have data on the nutritional status of the population; however updating the data regularly
proves to be a challenge. Also where data are available, their reliability or the reliability of their analysis has thrown
doubts on their usefulness in in
forming the decisions of policy makers. This OO aims at strengthening the capacity of
institutions in the Near East to develop tools to collect and analyze nutrition and household food security data in a rapid
and timely manner and to provide the science b
ase on which policies and strategies can be established. It also aims at
developing Nutrition Education programs based on local problem diagnosis to be implemented alongside food
production and income generating initiatives to multiply the impact on househ
old food and nutrition security.
