A one

day validation workshop on a study entitled “C
limate Change and Development in T
he Gambia”
was concluded yesterday at UN House in Bakau. The study which was commissioned by The United
Nations Development Prog
ramme (

was carried out by The International College of
usiness and
Human Resource Development (ICOBAHRD), based in The Gambia and D
r. Malanding Jaiteh
of the
Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN) of Columbia University in New York.

According to Dr. Jaiteh, study had the scope of looking into what is known on the climate, ecosystems,
goods and services in the country and the socio

economic implications of the impacts of climate change
on development endeavors. On findings from the s
tudy, Dr. Jaiteh revealed that the main effects of
climate change in the
country are

in the form of extreme weather patterns such

wind and rain storms at
the beginning and at the end of rains,

rban flooding, drought, salinity of water and soils as well as

impending danger of sea level rise.

Mr. Baboucarr Sarr of ICOBAHRD on his

described the workshop as a success in that they have
aim of setting the stage for Government and UNDP

to formulate a po
licy on Climate
Change for the c

He therefore thanked the National Climate Committee, NGOs, and all stake
holders for their inputs by way of data provision and sharing their knowledge.

Mr. Sarr expressed
optimism that the way is now clear for the finalization of the document, in view of
climate change
interventions in
the country in the

short, medium and long term
