Industry:

Healthcare and Life Science

Client:

Winthrop Pharmaceuticals, UK, a division of Sanofi
-
Aventis specializing in generic drugs. The
company was establis
hed January 2005.

Location:

UK

Solution provider
:

Inqology

Background info:

Winthrop Pharmaceuticals, a division of Sanofi
-
Aventis specializing in generic drugs,

has
succeeded in reducing order lead
-
time from 48 to 24 hours, with the help of a digital pen
and paper application. Since the company can now

ensure a rapid and consistent supply of
the most popular types of drugs regularly stocked by its customers
-

high
-
street pharmacies
-

Winthrop has gained a notable advantage over its competitors in the generic drugs business.

Greater supply chain efficien
cy, a reduction in order error
-
rates and improved sales force
productivity are just three of the benefits that a digital pen and paper workflow solution has
given Winthrop Pharmaceuticals. Using the new digital pen and paper solution, orders are
sent and p
rocessed by Winthrop’s head office in real
-
time; crucially, order
-
placement
accuracy levels have increased from 85% to 95% and are still rising.

Until recently, members of the field
-
sales teams used a regular paper
-
based system for all
this. The process wa
s administration
-
intensive, often requiring up two hours extra work to
‘catch up’ at the end of the working day. Orders had to be created manually and reviewed,
and the salesperson’s activity log had to be completed.

In addition to the efficiencies that th
e digital pen and paper solution has delivered to the
supply chain, Winthrop Pharmaceuticals also praise the system for its ease of deployment,
ease of use and the fact that their staff required only minimal training in order to get
started.

Problem:

To fi
nd an ordering system that would significantly reduce the lead time for the delivery of
drugs, whilst being easy for the sales force to use.

Solution:

A Digital Pen and Paper solution based on Anoto technology, implemented by Inqology, a UK
supplier specia
lizing in digital services.

Benefits:

-

Greater supply chain efficiency: lead time is reduced from 48 to 24 hours.

-

A reduction in order error
-
rates: orders sent and processed in real time resulting in
increased accuracy level for order from 85% to 95%.

-

Improved sales force productivity: saving an hour or more of administration work at the
end of working day.

Solution provider:

Digital Pen Systems

Background info:

Prevention is the best medicine for all, especially for patients in long term nursing care
facilities.

In nursing facilities in California, North Carolina, Arizona and Wisconsin medical
staf
f are now equipped with an innovative solution developed by Digital Pen Systems.
Certified nursing assistants (CNAs) and wound care nurses complete daily and routine
documentation using digital pen and paper technology.

While the primary goal for implemen
ting the new digital pen and paper solution is to
provide improved health care and reduced occurrences of pressure sores, an additional
benefit is cost savings. In addition to reducing 30% of the pressure ulcer and subsequent
treatment, the digital capture

has also significantly reduced paper handling which included
numerous Federal Express packages on a weekly basis.

Thanks to the digital pen and paper solution, now 1,500 patients have a better chance
avoiding pressure ulcer.

Problem:

Reduce the occurrence

of pressure ulcers (bed sores) in long term care patients. Reduce
volume of paper
work. Improve effectiveness of observa
tion note taking.

Solution:

The solution offered by Digital Pen Systems is based on digital pen and paper technology
invented by Anoto
. The solution allows certified nursing assis
tants (CNAs) and wound care
nurses to complete their daily and weekly docu
mentation using a digital pen and paper
facility forms.

Benefits:

-
Increases use of CNAs daily documentation in clinical decision makin
g.

-
Identifies residents at risk for pressure ulcer development sooner to prevent adverse
consequences.

-
Improves all aspects of care. Saves money by reducing pressure ulcer development.

-
Increases CNAs job satisfaction.

The Digital Pen and Paper enables the medical research centres to enhance treatment,
resulting in impr
oved care.

For the moment there are 60 pens in use at 24 centres all over
France. So far data concerning more than a thousand PH patients has been collected and the
number will continue to increase.

Problem:

To collect patient data from sufferers of Pulmon
ary Hypertension (PH) and elaborate about
PH being a rare disease to increase the knowledge of this disease and hence improve its
treatment
-

all over France. Enabling doctors to share knowledge and ensuring that patients
receive the best possible treatmen
t. Main challenge
-

to find a system that would be quick
and easy to use.

Solution:

A customized solution, created to collect data using uniquely patterned Case Report Forms.
Physicians can access and query the database of collected data dynamically usin
g a complete
web based application. The Digital Pen and Paper solution is developed by Kayentis based on
Anoto Digital Pen and Paper technology.

Benefits:

The Digital Pen and Paper solution enables the Observatoire HTAP to get hold of the most
complete, ac
curate and constantly up
-
to

Industry:

Healthcare and Life Science

Client:

Novartis Pharma Italy

Location:

Italy

Solution provider:

Digiwrite S.r.l

Background info:

Novartis in Italy has been pioneering a new approach using digital pen and paper. Their
solution was considered so innovative that the Italian organisation recently won Novartis’
most prestigious informat
ion technology award, the Global IT prize, in the “Innovation”
category.

Until now, information about the distribution of essays (pharmaceuitical sample products)
has been registered by pharmaceutical consultants on paper forms, to be later entered
manua
lly into Novartis’ digital records.

Keeping track of all these samples for both internal
statistical purpose and regulatory compliance is a complex task and a heavy administrative
burden. By replacing manual forms with a digital pen and paper solution, the

essay
management process has increased the efficiency and data accuracy resulting in that
pharmaceutical consultants can spend more time on core activities, data from the field is
updated continuously and the reporting to authorities is rationalised. Nova
rtis Italy's award
-
winning solution put 800 pens into the hands of their pharmaceutical consultants across the
country.

Problem:

To increase efficiency and data accuracy among pharmaceutical consul
tants leaving sample
products (‘essays’) with doctors. Acc
urate information is needed to satisfy the
pharmaceutical industry’s regulations.

Solution:

The solution with 800 pens in use is based on Anoto digital pen and paper technology. The
solution is the result of a cooperation between three different entities:
Digiwrite (Visual
Forms platform), Wel.Network and Everis. The pen is used to register essays and manage
data such as location of visits, ISF identity and medication type.

Benefits:

-
Digital capture of the number of essays left behind enables Novartis to c
omply with laws
and regulations governing the distribution of samples to doctors.

-
Administration work is reduced resulting in that more time can be spent on core activities.

-
Lower total operating costs for samples management.

Medicals Direct Group, providing medical screenings on behalf of insurance companies

Location:

UK

Solution provider:

PaperIQ. LTD. UK

Background info:

Medicals Direct provides medical screenings on behalf of insurance companies, processing
around 500,00
0 examination forms a year for people who have applied for life insurance
policies. Medicals Direct wanted to migrate its 450 nurses onto a modern data capture
technology. The nurses all work in the field, visiting patients at home to carry out checks and
rarely going into the office. One option that Medicals Direct looked at was Tablet PCs but the
high capital costs and training and support overheads were a concern to management. But
then Medicals Direct found out about Anoto technology

the nurses found
it easy to use,
more comfortable for patients when nurses are not hiding behind a screen. And it was also
found to be significantly less expensive. The system cost Medicals Direct in the region of
£400,000 over two years to implement, including digital pen
, licenses, BlackBerry
smartphones and the airtime cost for the BlackBerry smartphones. The Tablet PC solution.
originally considered by Medicals Direct would have cost in the region of £2 million.

Problem:

Providing an effective, secure, speedy system for

submitting the results of screenings.

Solution:

A solution based on Anoto Digital Pen and Paper technology develo
ped by PaperIQ,
incorporating BlackBerry technology.

Benefits:

Faster administrative process

the results are delivered more quickly, saving

time and
money.

Client:

The Norwegian arm of ISS, one of the world’s largest facilities mana
gement companies.

Location:

Norway

Solution provider:

DigitalPenn AS

Background info:

For facilitie
s management companies, ensuring that staff are maintaining properties to high
standards is an important part of customer service. Carrying out the quality control process
efficiently in the field can be a cumbersome process, but Digital Pen and Paper can
make the
task significantly easier.

For ISS, one of the world’s largest facilities groups employing more than 410,000 people, a
Digital Pen and Paper solution, developed by the Norwegian company Digitalpenn in
cooperation with Magicomm has helped make qua
lity control operations in Norway run
more smoothly. ISS has implemented the Digitalpenn solutions for team leaders carrying out
quality control checks. The team leaders report back from buildings that are being
maintained by ISS staff and note down their
findings on a form.

Previously they would have to take the forms back to the office and enter the information
into a database manually. Now, staff use Digital Pen and Paper to take their notes and send
the quality control information directly back to head
quarters via a Bluetooth handset. The
data is accessible in seconds, to be compared with a couple of days when using the old
system.

Problem:

Verification of physician documentation collected during patient care. Quick and easy
transfer of information int
o a digital format.

Solution:

eBC, a system developed by Bartcharts LLC and PSR, a Medical Edge company. eBC uses
digital paper and pen to combine the power of digital technology with the ease of traditional
pen and ink.

Benefits:

-
Verification of infor
mation for billing and quality purposes.

-
Ease of use for physicians.

-
Low cost.

-
Improved patient care.

Background info:

Checking a building or an apartment for damages before a tenant moves out is a sensitive
job. It has to be done accurately, and with as little fuss as pos

was a reliable tool for the collection and storage of survey data and tenants’ signatures.
Habitat 76 found a way to rationalize the change

over audit on rental apartments using a
digital pen and paper solution. The Anoto digi
tal pen and paper solution was one of three
options that were considered. Other ideas were to equip surveyors with either small PCs or
PDAs that they could carry to site visits. The digital pen and paper solution emerged as the
best option as it didn’t req

Algotex, Italian company specializing in wide format textile plotters. IMA makes and sells
equipment such as knitting and cutting machines for use in the textile industry worldwide.

Location:

Italy

S

Digiwrite s.r.l.

Background info:

A key task in the textile industry is the transfer of designs from paper to fabric. Traditionally,
this has been achieved by putting a paper pattern onto a large flat tablet called a digitalizer,
which then instruct
s the CAD machine behind it to print the shape onto the fabric. Algotex,
Italian company specializing in wide format textile plotters was looking for a more portable
device for plotting textile patterns and transferring them to fabric. The result was a tai
lor
-
made digital pen and paper application involving a special kind of transparent paper. The dot
pattern (which the digital pen can read) was printed on a transparent paper. This paper
could then be used in place of the cumbersome digitalizer

a much mor
e convenient option
since it can simply be rolled up a tube and carried around.”

Problem:

To find an alternative device for transferring patterns to fabric that would be more portable
than the bulky “digitalizer” commonly used.

Solution:

Digital pen and
paper solution developed by Digiwrite incorporating Anoto Functionality.

Benefits:

-
Cost effective and robust, the digital pen and transparent paper are much easier to carry
around.

Since the digital pen doesn’t “see” the lines drawn on it, the same pap
er can be used many

Interpan, one of Italy’s largest bread producers, serving bakeries in the country’s central and
southern regions.

Location:

Italy

Solution provider:

Digiwirte s.r.l.

Background info:

Interpan is one of Italy’s largest prod
ucers of bread, serving bakeries all over central and
southern regions. When bread comes out of the oven it’s heavy with moisture but after a
few hours, some of that moisture has evaporated so the bread weighs less. Interpan needed
a solution to solve thei
r weight loss (and consequently pricing) issue of bread between
leaving the production plant and arriving at the customer.

Besides solving the weight problem, the solution also yielded an unanticipated benefit. It’s
the truck drivers’ job to make a note
of changes in orders and communicate them back to
the production staff on a daily basis. Now, using digital pens and mobile phones, the drivers
are able to verify orders as they go along. The information arrives in good time and goes
directly into the comp
any’s computer system, so it no longer has to be processed by office
staff.

Problem:

production plant and arriving at the customer.

Solution:

A solution developed by
Digiwrite based on Anoto Digital Pen and Paper technology and
including a Bluetooth

Benefits:

-
Bread prices can be set accurately according to delivered bread weight

-
Scheduling and processing of orders are more efficient and worklo
ad of office staff reduced.

-
Waste is lower since Interpan knows exactly how much bread custo

-
Drivers verify orders remotely so they can “clock off” straight after the last delivery

Client:

Multiyork is the UK’s leading manufacturer and retailer of high
quality domestic furniture. Its
network of over 60 retail outlets accepts and fulfils more than 50,000 customer orders every
year.

Location:

UK

Solution provider:

Meticulus

Background info:

Customers choose from an extensive catalogue range of furnitu
re upholstery styles, fabrics
and finishes to configure pieces that exactly match their comfort options to create a sofa
that meets their individual needs just the way they’ve always done. They enjoy the attentive
service of a sales person, who notes their

preferences as they go along, and compiles their
order to be sent to the factory later. On the surface of it, nothing has changed. Below the
surface, everything has.

Problem:

In 2005, the company decided to make some important changes. Its aims were:

o

To

increase the speed of the order taking process in its store

o

To raise the accuracy of orders, and hence customer satisfaction

o

To shorten delivery cycles

They set out to achieve all this without disrupting the customers’ positive in
-
store
experience.

A sim
ple solution for taking orders was needed

one which would not demand special staff
training, would feel “normal” for customers, but would nonetheless give all the advantages
of instant electronic data capture.

Solution:

Reassuringly familiar in appearan
ce, yet offering the highest performance, digital pen and
paper technology combines the best of both worlds. Multiyork’s solution employs 275 digital
pens across the company’s 60 stores, which were provided by Anoto partner, Meticulus.
Meticulus also provi
ded a Forms Automation System (FAS), which makes it possible for
Multiyork to print forms on demand, track orders and ensure in
-
store validation of
information (with easy two
-
way connection between the company’s SAP ERM system).

SAP consultancy Mandant wa
s chosen to work with Meticulus. Mandant uses a standard SAP
Business Connector facility to import the xml data file produced by Meticulus’ system.
Orders are thus automatically created within SAP.

Here’s how it works:

1.

Sales people advise their customer
s and write down their final choices on a traditional
paper order form.

2.

After completing these order forms, sales people dock their pens at the in
-
store
computer which registers the order information (a copy of the order is automatically
printed out for th
e customer).

3.

The order is validated in a simple Internet browser application and the data submitted
to the SAP back office system.

4.

A FAS server at Multiyork’s Thetford headquarters provides simultaneous service to all
60 stores.

Benefits:

Multiyork is very

satisfied with the performance of its DP&P solution. Delivery times have
been reduced, and very few inaccurate orders slip through the net. Both these factors serve
to raise customer satisfaction. What’s more, order taking can continue even in the event o
f a
computer or network failure. Each digital pen can store more than100 orders.

Arguably the most significant improvement for Multiyork has been the almost complete
elimination of errors. This leads to excellent goodwill and significant cost savings. It
helps
that the sales person must validate each order form before it is sent to the factory.
Safeguards are also built
-
in to the system to prevent a faulty order from being accepted. For
example, if a leg finish has been specified that is invalid for that m
odel of sofa it will be
flagged as an error and the salesperson will be asked to enter the correct finish. The latest
ranges of cabinet, upholstery, fabrics and comfort options are uploaded onto the in
-
store
computers each morning so it’s always up
-
to
-
date
. The technology is streamlined and simple
to use.

“The beauty of this system is that sales people hardly needed any training to use it. Any
qualms about the technology were soon quashed as each store went “live” and the staff
quickly grasped how simple a
nd user
-
friendly it is.”

Client:

HUBER Reklametechnik GmbH

Location:

Europe

Solution provider:

WonderNet

Background info:

HUBER is the leading provider of advertising technology solutions in Austria and c
entral
Eastern Europe. The business activities range from the design and construction of
advertising towers and advertising suspension towers right up to the manufacturing of LED
components for video and other electronic advertising displays. The enterpris
e was founded
in 1967 and today employs 100+ qualified specialists in many areas of expertise.

Problem:

HUBER is situated in Austria with subsidiaries in Slovenia and Croatia. Each day HUBER
generates a large volume of customer quotations for the European

market, including
Slovenian and Croatian customers. Internally, each individual quotation must be signed both
by the management of the subsidiary and by the management in Austria. Due to this
internal requirement, the process of quotation generation is ti
me consuming and often
takes up to a week. Because of the competitive nature of the business HUBER recognized
the need to become more responsive to customers needs. The organizational challenge was
to drastically reduce the internal cycle time while mainta
ining the approval process
requirements.

Solution:

SIGNificant offered a solution that met all the internal approval requirements of HUBER
while greatly reducing process turnaround and customer waiting times, in this highly
competitive market.

The process

1. Customer quotations are created by the administrator in Marchtenk/Austria using an
existing system and converted into an unsigned PDF. The quotation is stored locally and sent
to the various signatories via email.

2. The administrator uses SIGNificant
Flow to define which signatories are required to sign a
quotation. The signatories are registered on the SIGNificant server and then automatically
one after the other they are invited via email to digitally sign the quotation using a pen
tablet.

3. All res
ponsible personnel are now able to personally sign without delay, from any remote
location. A process that required several days to complete is now reduced for less than one
day.

4. Once the last signatory has signed the quotation, the administrator as ini
tiator of the
SIGNificant Flow receives an email indicating that the signed document is ready to be
retrieved from the “signed box”. Now the signed electronic quotation can be sent to the
customer by email and centrally stored at the file server.

Benefits
:

HUBER's expectation was to be able to send signed and approved quotations for Slovenian
and Croatian customers within 24 hours after generation. By signing all quotations with
SIGNificant this organizational goal was easily achieved. Huber has drasticall
y shortened the
process of quotation generation. The customers receive their quotations faster and on an
electronic format, which is important to counter the local competitors.

Added

on Values:

1.

Increased efficiency and security
of the quotation generation
process.

2.
Simple adjustment
to existing customer systems and workflows.

3.
Easy short
-
time training
for users and administrators.

4.
Rapid conversion to paperless
quotation generation with electronic archiving.

SIGNificant requires no change in hab
its (sign as you always did) or learning any aspect of
new software.

provide a visible security presence, patrol the streets, respond to safety and security issues
such as anti

Problem

CSS

Manager Ashok Mehra said about 25 to 35 incident reports were filled in each shift. “At
the moment, the forms are handled by four people, including the shift team leader and
administration staff, within the process of getting typed into t

archived,” he said. “This creates delays in the reporting system and means there is the
potential for reports to be lost.”

Solution:

Mayor Russell Aubrey said the digital pens were another example of the City of Melville and
the CS
S leading the way in the local government arena. “The City of Melville is always keen
to embrace new technology that will make our products and services more efficient for
residents and ratepayers,” he said. “The new pens will streamline the incident repor

Sao Paulo's Justice Tribunal

Solution provider:

WonderNet

Location:

Sao Paulo, Brazil

Background info:

Sao Paulo, Brazil's most modern business center, is the wo
rld's third largest city and the
largest city in South America. With 17 million inhabitants, almost every major industry in
Brazil is based in Sao Paulo and 15 percent of Brazil's gross national product is generated
there.

Tribunal de Justica do Estado de

Sao
-
Paulo is therefore one of the most important and
biggest court houses in Brazil, in charge of its vast population's justice interactions.

Problem:

As the traditional signature still being recognized as an acknowledged method for
authenticating legal
documentation, the need to secure and manage over 15,000 signatories
is not a trivial issue. Sao Paulo's court had to find a way of both authenticating signatures
and at the same time improving document handling procedures.

Solution:

WonderNet has equippe
d Sao Paulo courts with over 15,000 signing stations that are being
used daily for biometrically signing and sending secured legal documents using the P
enflow
-
based PenDocs™ product family. Using PenDocs the court can also achieve the increased
efficiency of paper
-
free document workflow as there is no need for printing court orders just
for the sake of signing them.

The PenDocs product family applies the

Penflow biometric signature functionality into
commonly used programs such as Microsoft® Word and Adobe® Acrobat. PenWord™ and
PenPDF™ allow created documents to be electronically and biometrically signed. PenDocs'
intuitive menu bar allows judges to easi
ly embed their handwritten signature into
documents, creating a digital signature which also includes an RSA certificate and the
time/date stamp. Once the signatures are verified against the Penflow database of pre
-
enrolled signatures (over LAN or WAN), th
e documents are protected from unauthorized
modifications.

An inherent advantage of using PenDocs is the fact that there is no need for judges to be
physically presence at a specific location in order to issue court orders, such as immediate
arrest warrant
s. Using the unique PenVelope™ module offered by Penflow, signed court
orders and regulation files are securely sealed and emailed so that only authorized
signatories receiving these file can open them for viewing.
