Maximizing MOM With Automation

One of the most important choices IT managers have to make is
how
to automate the
many routine tasks that keep their operations running. Since MOM offers a powerful
scripting platform that can be triggered by events on moni
tored servers, it
might seem

to
be a
good place to put the automation
.
In other words some would argue
, since
MOM
is
smart enough to detect the problems, it should be
smart enough to
fix
them too.

As I have
spent many years automating tasks with produc
ts such as MOM, I recommend
a different approach.
It is a much simpler solution
to integrate MOM with a
generic
automation tool. As MOM deployments are still relatively new, now is a great time to be
thinking about this integration.

One product that com
plements MOM very well in this
regard
is Opalis Robot
, from
Opalis Software
.

Robot is reasonably priced for the small and medium sized business,
and case studies at
www.Opalis.com

show that many businesses have
used

Robot for
significant
task

automation
.

Robot
’s GUI
-
based client interface
allows
IT staff
to
create
reliable and robust workflows
that can be called from the command line or from an
external event such as a MOM alert

or event
.

To connect Robot to a MOM
configuration
group, you need to buy the MOM
“CAP” connector.

The
MOM CAP is a two
-
way connector. Corrective workflows can be triggered from
MOM, and other applications can be “MOM
-
enabled” by having Robot create or update
MOM alerts. The following scre
enshot shows two such sample workflows:

Obviously, Opalis Robot is a powerful extension to any MOM deployment
, and a full
discussion of the technical merits is beyond the scope of this review
.
If you haven’t
already downloaded a trial, I encourage you
to do so. Start with the sample tasks as you
are learning the product, but let your goal be to automate the tasks that are the most
tedious and complex in your routines.
By m
apping those workflows in Robot
, you

will
achieve a truly significant return in
time savings and error reduction
.
