Proposal for Funds to Provide

A Color Laser Printer for the Local Area Network of

Agnew Middle School

A.

Justification for the Need and Use of a Color Laser Printer

Teachers at Agnew regularly incorporate

technology applications as a part of learner
-
centered instruction. We want to improve student and teacher publications by purchasing
a color laser jet printer because a precise color image draws the eye and engages the
imagination as well as adding reali
sm to print publication. Teachers and students will use
the printer and appropriate software to enhance their presentations and increase student
-
centered learning.

B.

Introduction of Agnew Middle School Local Administration

As the first middle school in

Mesquite, Agnew has grown with the district through the
social, curricular and technological changes for nearly half a century. As we grow in this
new century, we sometimes find it necessary to change the direction in which we are
headed.

Principal Ric
hard Armand has been a refreshingly innovative administrator, actively
supporting and meeting the needs of the students and the faculty of Agnew. Assistant
Principals Jane VanSickle and Marvin Daniels, work hard to ensure the success of
students through s
upporting individual teacher and team decisions. Angela Jones, the
Campus Technology Facilitator has been at Agnew for 11 years where she supports the
staff in meeting the individual technology needs of students. Ms. Jones monitors and
maintains the func
tions of the technology in the building. As Technology Facilitator, Ms.
Jones will maintain the requested printer and provide access to all students and teachers
through the technology laboratories.

C.

Target population intended to benefit from the projec
t

Regular and special needs students of all ethnic and socio
-
economic groups from the
sixth, seventh, and eighth grades at Agnew will have equal access to the color laser
printer for projects such as bulletin boards, class books, science fair projects, pic
torial
presentations, etc.

Access to the printer will enhance presentation and entice students into more active
learning. It allows them to provide more accessible, vivid and exciting materials in their
own active
-
learning projects.

D.

Scope of the projec
t: geographic range, number of individuals involved

The color laser printer we are requesting would be limited in range to the Agnew Local
Area Network which services the 1120 students and approximately 80 members of the
faculty.

E.

Duration of the proj
ect

The purchase involved in this project will involve a five
-
year cycle. In the first year the
color laser printer would be purchased with five color toner cartridges. Five color toner
cartridges will be purchased each of the next four years.

F.

Goals
of each phase of implementation

In the first year of the program, we would like to train teachers in integration of the color
printer in curriculum to assist in presentation and teaching the technology TEKS, as well
as their content area TEKS. The technolo
gy administrator will create and provide
professional development to assist teachers in integration. In the following years, we
would also seek to train students in using the color laser printer to strengthen their
presentation and communications.

H.

Intended means of providing
personnel support for the project

The Technology Administrator will provide support for this project as a part of the duties
of the position.

I.

Performance Measures

Performance would be measured by use of the machine. As teachers use the printer to
enhan
ce their lessons and to teach the TEKS of their field and technology, student
interest and participation should increase. Teachers will evaluate the involvement and
interest of their students using the evaluation form (Appendix B at the end of each school

year. Students will evaluate interest and utility using the evaluation form (Appendix C)
at the end of each project where the student uses the printer.
