PROF. DR. RAFAEL ARACIL (*1946) is currently full professor and head of the Department of Control
Engineering, Electronics and Computer Science of Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. He received the
degree of Electrical Engineering in 1971 and Ph.D. in Cont
rol Engineering in 1975 from UPM. His main
activities have been in the areas of Robotics, Advanced Manufacturing and Image Processing. He has
been working in the development of robots for news applications and advanced telerobotics for 30 years,
and has de
veloped several prototypes that are being used by industrial partners. He is the author of several
books, papers and communications in topics mentioned above. He is a member of several scientific and
technical organizations being leader of the IFAC Compute
r Vision Spanish Group and managing director
for the Latin
American Robotics Network sponsored by the Spanish Government. He has participated in
several EU funded projects in ESPRIT, EUREKA, BRITE and IST programs.
