ABSTRACT



Purpose of the Study


The overall aims of the ACCESS2ALL FP7 EC co
-
funded project is to define
concrete mobility schemes, guidelines and policy recommendations, ensuring
accessibility of Public Trans
port to ALL users, through the coordination of current
research efforts, the production of common research roadmaps, the identification of
best practice models and the appropriate use of ICT (Information and
Communication Technology) aids and networks. Wit
hin this concept, the creation of a
best practices database is envisaged, which will include descriptions of existing best
practices in the provision of accessible transportation services for all, respecting the
needs of people suffering from mental or phy
sical disabilities. The aim is to identify
and collect good (and bad, as examples to avoid) practices from all over the world,
addressing transportation needs and solutions for different modes of transportation
and different accessibility needs and structu
re them in an online, public database.


Approach and/or Methodology


The concept of the creation of the on
-
line best practices database is defined,
primarily, by the identification and collection of relevant best practices. This is
performed by literature
and internet review of existing PT (Public Transport) services
all over the world and selection of the ones that have been evaluated as best
practices or are considered as innovations that are expected to promote the
accessibility of all users to public tr
ansport services. After collecting these practices,
they are going to be structured into an online database, hosted in the ACCESS 2 ALL
project website, which will be public.


The database is constructed in the form of a web based front end, providing all
the
required functionalities. The technologies that were used for the development of the
database are:


a) HTML/PHP/CSS, for

development of a dynamic web application,

b) MySQL, a database tool for the design and management of databases, and

c) Netbeans
IDE Early Access for PHP, an open source design application where
a
fully functional and complete website

can be created.



Results or Expected Results


This work will result to the creation of an on
-
line, publicly available database, which
will offer the

possibility to all associated groups, i.e. public transport providers,
researchers, associations of mobility impaired people, decision makers, politicians,
general public, etc., to consult it and retrieve information on existing and emerging
best practice
s on accessibility on public transport for all citizens.


Conclusion


To conclude from the above, the aim of the project, which is also depicted in the work
presented in this paper, is to ameliorate the current situation regarding the
accessibility in pu
blic transport, defending the right of all citizens for barrier
-
free
mobility. By creating this best practices database, sharing of knowledge and
practices throughout Europe will be achieved, aiming at encouraging the application
of good practice and the a
voidance of bad ones, towards enhancing the public
transport mobility for Europeans.
