Department of Production Engineering

About the Branch

The Production Engineering branch, related to
the manufacturing processes, activities and
manufacturing management is considered as the
specialized branch of Mechanical Engineering.


The B E (Production Engineering) program is
designed to cater the needs of manufacturing
industries.

The program curriculum includes
functional streams through the various
group of course such as Materials and
Processes, Manufacturing Engineering,
Design Engineering, Manufacturing
Automation and Industrial Engineering and
Management.


In addition to these courses the students
are also exposed to the core areas in
Mechanical Engineering such as Thermal
Engineering, Design Engineering, Machine
Tool Design and Automation.

The main objective of the production
engineering program is integration of
manufacturing technology with management
practices in planning and controlling the
design, development and operations of
manufacturing systems.


Rapid advances in manufacturing technology
(for example, computer integrated
manufacturing), management information
systems (for example, enterprise resource
planning), and new manufacturing concepts
(for example agile manufacturing, lean
manufacturing) are reinforcing the need of
integration of technological, organizational,
economic and human factors.

Opportunities to the Students


The B E (Production Engineering) graduates
have opportunities in nearly all the variety of
industries engaged in the design,
manufacturing and automobile engineering.


The graduates can work in the area of
manufacturing that on shop floor, inspection,
assembly, maintenance and management.


The graduates of Production Engineering
have a good opportunities for Post
Graduation in Engineering and Management.

About the Department


Department of Production Engineering is one of the
pioneering departments at KIT’s College of Engineering.


The department was established in 1983. Since its inception,
the department has been consistently imparting quality
education to undergraduate and postgraduate students and
preparing them to face the ever
-
changing challenges of
modern manufacturing industry.


The primary objective of the department is to satisfy the
needs of all its stakeholders through consistently delivering
better education.


The department has always tried to improve the quality of
education by continuously updating the knowledge in the
emerging technologies and techniques in the area of
production engineering, and by incorporating the same in the
curriculum.


These efforts have resulted in development of technological
and managerial skills of students, and helped them prepare to
meet the challenges of globalization.

NBA Accreditation



The department is accredited twice by the National
Board of Accreditation, AICTE, New Delhi, first in
the year 2005, and subsequently in the year 2008,
which is valid for a period of three years.

Toppers right from the first batch graduated. Till
date total 53 students secured place in the first
five ranks declared by the
Shivaji

The department has state of the art laboratories
required to fulfill the requirements of the
curriculum like Central Workshop,
CAD/CAM/CIM, CAD/CAE,
Mechatronics

Metallurgy, Metrology, Industrial Hydraulics and
Pneumatics, Foundry Technology, Welding
Technology, Tool Engineering, Metal Forming,
UG Computer Laboratory, PG Computer
Laboratory with total Investment above Rs. 1
Corers. Some of the major equipment are CNC
lathe and milling machine, Six

axes Articulated
Robot, Surface Grinding Machine, Surface
roughness tester, etc

Application Software



The department is well equipped with state of the art
computing facilities with total 68 high end machines
and the latest application software in the area of Solid
Modeling, Manufacturing, Analysis and Simulation.


The software like CATIA, SOLIDWORKS, AUTOCAD,
UGNX

4, IDEAS are available for solid modeling,


whereas UG CAD/CAM, CUTVIEWER LATHE,
CUTVIEWER MILL, ESPRIT CAM are available for
Computer Aided Manufacturing.


For the propose of analysis the students are provided
with ANSYS

FeMAP

Nastran
.


The simulation software includes AUTOMATION
STUDIO, FLEXSIM, ARISTO,
Fluidsim
, LEKIN,
ARENA.

Industry Institute Interaction



The department has maintained a continued and
strong liaison with the industry.



Experts from industry are invited regularly to deliver
Guest Lecturers on recent trends and developments in
the area of manufacturing technology and
management.


A good number of industrial visits are arranged as a
part of curriculum and as per the need of subjects.



The students of third year engineering are required to
undergo a compulsory in
-
plant training of one month.


This helps to bridge the gap between the theoretical
concepts and industrial practice.


Majority of the final year students projects are
sponsored by the local industries.

The research and development activities
of the faculty of the department are
displayed through the number of
publications of in the journals and
conference proceedings. The faculty
members have published over 100 papers
in the National and International Journals
and Conference Proceedings.

The department is offering Certificate
Courses in solid modeling software CATIA,
UNIGRAPHICS NX

4 and analysis package
ANSYS

12 to the students at nominal cost in
addition to the regular programs defined by
the university to enhance the capabilities of
the students and to improve their
employability.


The course modules for these courses are
developed by the department and there is a
good response to these courses every year.
