Impact of Automation on Society

A first criteria A report

1/27/2012

Hand in your research summary (max 1.5 pages) and

your report (min. of one page
-

max of 2 pages).

NO extra cover page please.

Hints for success:

Choose a form of
automation that has had a large impact on society. That will make it
easier to get information about it and form your opinion.

Choose to research from a few good websites

don’t overdo it.

Choose the best arguments to help defend your opinion. Don’t just
list them, use them
to make a point.

Be sure to use and demonstrate an understanding of the
criteria to evaluate a
system

(p. 169 science text). Chapter 6 is the science for this assignment.

Hints on writing an

informed opinion
report/essay
:

Even though the arguments comprised in
this assignment

originate from personal
opinions, they should be backed up by further independent
research/
evidence. That is, all
claims should be supported as well as reinforced by examples, analogies, facts, and
quo
tes.

It
requires a very clear
point of view (
thesis statement

i.e. automation of the auto
industry has had a negative impact on society because a, b, c…)

because all the contents
following it will be aimed at proving its validity. Every argument should be

presented
concisely and always supported by other sources.
You

should also explain how this
particular position can be understood in the broader context of
society (i.e. social,
economic and environmental impact)
. The concluding paragraph ought to restate

your
point of view (
the thesis
)

as related to all arguments illustrated in the
report/essay

U
se varied source
s

information in order to validate your points. Draw from multiple
disciplines in order to
show understanding of

the subject and make your opinio
n essay
sound authoritative, well
-
thought, and justified.

Avoid being too personal

don’t expose too many details from your personal
life;

Avoid going off
-
topic

all arguments should reinforce thesis statement and you
shouldn’t go off mark providing addi
tional information on the arguments
themselves

their origin, definition, etc.;

Avoid excessively emotional content

opinion essay presents a point of view and
illustrates how it was developed by the author. Avoid aggressive tone, moral
judgments, and do
n’t attack the opposite side
.

READ THE WHOLE ASSIGNMENT and be sure to include all aspects of it so
that you can get the best mark possible.

Criteria A Issue

Informed Opinion:
Impact of Automation on Society

Issue:

Many jobs and tasks that used to be done by
people are now being done by automated systems. Choose a job or task
that has been automated and decide if this automation has had a positive or negative effect on society.

The number of jobs that have become automated continues to grow. Jobs that have be
en automated include:

phone
-
answering systems

automated teller machine (ATM)

(Figure 6.22)

assembly lines (in manufacturing)

checkouts at libraries or stores

ticket
-
dispensing machines at movie theatres (Figure 6.22)

farming (poultry, dairy,
hydroponics)

and more…

Analyze and Evaluate

Choose
any job

that has been automated

it does not need to be from the above list of examples

but feel free to
use them!

Your task is to look at the positive or negative impacts the automation of that job has had on society, and
decide whether the automation is positive or negative as a

whole. Research evidence to support your argument. You
will present your findings as
a w
ritten report
.

Be sure to use the Criteria A rubric for IB science to help shape your
work, as this is what you will be evaluated from.

1.

For your background
research, answer the following questions

on the worksheet provided

(download the worksheet
and t
ype directly into it)
. Be sure to use your own words and to cite sources appropriately.

How was this task accomplished before it was automated?

How is this task accomplished with automation?

What is the social impact of this automation?

What is the

economic impact of this automation?

What is the environmental impact of this automation?

Are there any other impacts? If so, what are they?

2.
Summarize the information you find in a short
report
.
Your report should demonstrate your
informed
opinion on the
impact of your chosen automation on society. Be sure to use and demonstrate an understanding of the
criteria to
evaluate a system

(p. 169 science text).
Since your background research will highlight both the positive and negative
impacts of

this automation, your report should be written
so that only your
informed
point of view is argued. You may
present ideas that refute the opposing side
if

that makes your argument/point of view stronger.

Your report should be typed and be no

less than one
page and no

more than two pages in length. Use size 12 font in
either Arial or Times New Roman.

Don’t forget to include the background research worksheet.
