DB2 Announcements
IBM DB2 Universal Database V8.1 for Linux, UNIX and Windows
Overview

Nov 21, DB2 Version 8.1 became generally available. At the conclusion of a most successful beta
program, the new DB2 ships with more than 438 new functions, including:
• innovative self-managing and self-tuning capabilities;
• XML and Web Services;
• advanced performance, scalability and availability features;
• easy-to-use application development enhancements.
The new DB2 comes with simplified packaging and aggressive pricing to meet the needs of small,
medium, and large customers, and it further lowers the DB2 five-year total cost of ownership (TCO)
advantage over key a competitor.

Here are some key highlights of the new DB2:

Autonomic: The large and distributed data management systems are rapidly becoming too complex for
humans to effectively configure, manage, optimize and diagnose. New DB2 autonomic features, such as,
Configuration Advisor or Health Center, reduce the complexity of managing database systems. The self-
tuning Configuration Advisor enables database administrators (DBAs) to eliminate the need for manual
tuning of performance related parameters, enabling users to accomplish performance tuning tasks in a
matter of minutes instead of several days. The self-managing Health Center feature automatically updates
DBAs on various operational parameters, alerts them to offline situations, and advises them on required
corrective actions, resulting in higher DBA productivity, lower DBA skill requirements and efficient
system operations.

Virtual: The new DB2 federated Web Services enhanced capability enables customers to access or
consolidate distributed information through a single SQL query from other Web Service providers, as if
the information resided in DB2 itself.

Open: Continuing on its long tradition of supporting open standards, such as, SQL, Java, X/Open,
ODBC, the new DB2 has further enhanced its support for open standards, such as, XML, and Web
Services. This support enables businesses to exchange information easily within or outside of their
enterprise. XML document storage and retrieval are an integral part of the new DB2, and this support is
provided by a combination of SQL language and XML Extender enhancements.

Integrated: The new DB2 enables deep integration with leading ISV applications, such as, SAP, J.D.
Edwards, other middleware software, such as WebSphere, and system platforms, such as, Linux, to
reduce time to market and lower operating costs.

2002-11-22 Page 2 of 23
DB2NYTT - Newsletter from IBM DB2 Data Management Software Sweden No. 4– 2002

Robust Foundation: New DB2 advance performance features include the innovative Multidimensional
Data Clustering (MDC) feature, which improves performance of certain complex query workloads by as
much as 90 percent. Various new DB2 online utilities and availability enhancements decrease planned
outages by up to 85%. The null and default compression feature results in more than 50% disk space
savings in certain applications, furthering DB2 data scalability.

Aggressive Pricing and Simplified Packaging: The new DB2 has priced its Workgroup Server
Unlimited Edition (WSUE) aggressively for SMB market. A First Albany Corp. analyst said, "This will
take DB2 back to a 2-to-1 price advantage versus Oracle Standard Edition, which sells for $15,000 per
CPU”, as quoted in a Reuters article "IBM to slash some database prices"
The new DB2 is also shipping simplified packaging for large enterprises by merging DB2 Enterprise
Edition and DB2 Enterprise Extended Edition into one package called DB2 Enterprise Server Edition
(ESE) with a separately licensed option called DB2 Database Partitioning Feature (DPF) for database
partitioning within a single hardware server or across a cluster of hardware servers.

IBM Informix Announcements
News in IBM Informix Online Version 5.2
Below are some words on interesting news in the new Online V5.2 from my Informix colleague Rickard
Linck..

IBM announces the general availability of IBM Informix OnLine Extended Edition version 5.20
A new product name for two popular Informix products: Informix OnLine and Informix STAR. With this
release, IBM adds distributed computing to a proven database server at no extra cost!

Support for greater than 2 GB chunk offsets: This performance related feature allows you to utilize the
entire capacity of the disk drive without partitioning it into smaller logical devices and employing logical
volume managers. Thereby, increasing your ROI in maximizing your use of the latest computer
hardware with its larger storage capacity and saving you the cost of purchasing third party storage
management solutions.

Support for Pipe Connectivity: This allows the Rapid Application Development (RAD) tools -- such as
IBM Informix 4GL and IBM Informix SQL, version 7.31 or later -- to use pipes to communicate with
OnLine Extended Edition 5.20 servers running on the same machine, instead of having to use a TCP/IP
loopback connection with Informix Star or Informix Net. Customers who use OnLine Extended Edition
5.20 with the 7.31 tools therefore save the cost of purchasing Informix Net or Informix Star separately,
and customers who are still using the version 4.x tools can upgrade to OnLine Extended Edition 5.20 and
take advantage of the many language enhancements in the version 7.31 tools.

Finally, IBM is also announcing IBM Informix OnLine Extended Edition for Linux version 5.20:
Linux is a major platform for database and application servers. IBM Informix OnLine Extended Edition
for Linux gives you a proven, easy-to-manage database offering high performance, stability and
reliability. Together, Linux and IBM Informix OnLine Extended Edition for Linux are the building
blocks for success in e-business. For the Linux users in all of us, you will receive all of the benefits of
IBM Informix OnLine Extended Edition for the low price of $199*.

By popular demand from IIUG, IBM is also proud to announce IBM Informix OnLine Personal
Edition version 5.20. It is a single user product available only on Linux that provides all the same
functionality of IBM Informix OnLine but at an economical cost of only $49*. IBM Informix OnLine
Personal Edition allows individuals to quickly become familiar with the easy-of-use and multi-media
capability of this proven and trusted relational database management system. Individual users developing

Enjoy!

Med vänliga hälsningar
Lennart Henäng, Henfield AB

BI & Data Warehousing High End Competitive Analysis Report 2002
Survey.Com has published a paper called "Business Intelligence & Data Warehousing High End
Competitive Analysis Report 2002”. This report shows that some of the industry analysts have been
wrong on a few topics.

Survey Highlights:
• 147 DBAs, Systems Administrators, and executives took the survey in North America
• DB2 EEE requires 19 people to support the warehouse/mart in contrast to Teradata's 29. Teradata
hides their high support costs in the SQL programming department where industry analysts failed
to look for additional TCO costs. This refutes Teradata's position that you need fewer laborers to
support Teradata warehouses.
• DB2 EEE DBA's support 3 Terabytes of disk, Teradata DBA's 2.9 TB, and Oracle RAC DBAs
supports only 1.4TB.
• DB2 EEE warehouses average 38 CPUs, Teradata 40, Oracle 10. Oracle implementations are
relatively small, denormalized data marts suggesting a lack of scale-out capability

The FREE report can be downloaded from: http://www.survey.com/products/reports.html
