Statistical An
alysis Questions
–
Assignment 1
(Due b
y
Midnight

Sunday, September 8
th
)
For each of the questions below, carry out an appropriate analysis to a
nswer the research
questions.
For each question identify the parameter(s) of interest.
Example:
Y
ou might state,
mean month of the pregnancy that prenatal care began
for expecting
mothers in North Carolina
.
Some questions will require to you carry out an appropriate test to answer
the
question asked. If possible, be sure to quantify any significant findings using an
appropriate confidence interval.
Example:
Y
ou might carry out a
one

sample
t

test to determine if the
mean month that prenatal care
for expecting mothers began
is le
ss than 3 months.
If you conclude there is evidence that
the mean is less than 3 months, then you should provide a confidence interval for the
population mean as well.
Other questions involve estimation of a population parameter only, i.e. you do not
need
to carry out a statistical test. You should provide a point estimate
for the
parameter of interest and a 95% confidence interval.
Example:
You might be asked to estimate the mean month that prenatal care began for expecting
mothers in North Carolina. Th
us you should report the sample mean and find the
confidence interval for population mean.
North Carolina Birth Data
Data description:
The North Carolina State Center for Health Statistics and Howard W. Odum
Institute
for Research in Social Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill make
publicly available birth and infant death data for all children born in the state of North
Carolina. T
hese data can be accessed at:
http://www.irss.unc.edu/odum/j sp/content_node.jsp?nodeid=10
The data
for this assignment is
contained in
the file

Research Questions and Analysis
Tasks
Conduct an appropriate
statistical
analysis in JMP to answer the following research question
s
using the guidelines above. As this is the first assignment I want to include all relevant JMP
output of these research questions.
(5 pts. each)
1.
Is
the proportion of male and female babies born the same?
2.
Is the percentage of infants born with a low birth weight (< 2500g) greater for smokers than
non

smokers?
3.
Estimate the risk associated with smoking for having an infant with a low birth weight (<
2
500g).
4.
Is there evidence that prenatal
care
begins on average during the 1
st
trimester?
5.
Is there evidence that over one

third
(33%)
of babies in N.C. are born out of wedlock?
6.
Do the years of education differ between mothers and fathers?
7.
Is there
evidence that minority mothers have their first child at a younger age?
8.
Is there evidence that the gestational age of infants born to mothers who smoked during
pregnancy is less than that
for non

smoking mothers?
9.
Estimate the
percent
age
of labors
that
are induced.
10.
Estimate the
mean gestatio
nal age of infants born in NC.
11.
Is there evidence of a
difference
in the mean age
for
mothers
who gave birth vaginally vs.
those
who had a C

section?
