INTRODUCTION

This year’s newsletters will focus on Ruby Payne’s

Framework for Understanding
Poverty

key points. Each key point will be discussed in detail. If you have any
que
stions or stories along the
way
, I have created a blog for you to shar
e them with
all of us. The link

for this blog will appear at the end of each newsletter

installment
.

The key points are:

ž
Poverty is relative.

Poverty occurs in all races.

Generational and situational poverty a
re different.

This work is based on patterns. All patterns have exceptions.

Schools operate from middle class norms and values.

Individuals bring with them the hidden rules of the class in which they were
raised.

There are cultural differences in poverty.

This study is cross
-
cultural and
focuses on economics.

We must neither excuse them nor scold them. We must teach them.

We must teach them that there are two sets of rules.

To move from poverty to middle class, one must give up (for a period of time)
rel
ationships for achievement.

Two things that help one move out of poverty are:

o

Education

o

Relationships

Four reasons one leaves poverty are:

o

Too painful to stay

o

Vision or goal

o

Key relationship

o

Special talent/skill

Again, the upcoming newsletters will focus

on each key point in detail. I look
forward to hearing from you!
