Ease & Consistency of Navigation

3 Major Methods for Content Creation via
Collaboration & Communications

Blogs

An Informal method of Communication

Active Research Topics

To Support a
Collaborative Approach amongst Academics &
Researchers in multiple locations to carry out
Knowledge Work on the topic of Climate Change

Research Publications

A means for Sharing
Knowledge gained from Research Findings

B
LOGS

Openness and Expression

Not limited to a certain scope

Able to receive feedback from users

CTIVE

R
ESEARCH

T
OPICS

More formal than blogs

Main method for conducting research

It is a more formalized knowledge
repository

KMS D
ESIGN

Modular

Able to add various diverse functions
as requirements arise

For example, text to speech module which enables
access to the KMS for the visually impaired

Highly customizable & able to adapt to changes
at a rapid pace

The separation of the
Content from Code
allows
for the overhaul of the system’s look and feel
without affecting the existing Knowledge
Repository

Design Approach

Intention to make the system
“Future Proof”
as far as practical

:
(OPTIONAL

ONLY IF WE HAVE TOO
MUCH TIME TO KILL!!)
MAYBE

NOT

USEFUL

As far as practical, we based our system design
approach on
Shneiderman’s

User Interface
Design Principles

Shneiderman’s

Principles:

Strive for consistency.

Enable frequent users to use shortcuts.

Offer informative feedback.

Design dialog to yield closure.

Offer simple error handling.

Permit easy reversal of actions.

Support internal locus of control.

Reduce short
-
term memory load.

C
ONCLUSIONS

AND

R
EFLECTIONS

This is the first prototype where various assumptions
have been made, therefore the benefit is that there is
great flexibility in the modification of the system, as
users see fit

We are able to add, remove, or modify any section of
the system with relative ease due to its modular
architecture and design

A lot of time and effort has gone in to refining and
modifying certain aspects of the work we had
originally conducted

Lessons:

NEVER
UNDERESTIMATE
THE WORK
TO BE CONDUCTED AS THINGS CONSTANTLY
CAN CHANGE OR COME UP

AND THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A SIMPLE
PROJECT!!

Q & A S

Any suggestions to improve the system and the
functions it supports?

Any Questions?

Comments?

Observations?
