Pathfinder on
Resources for Undergraduate Nursing Students

Introduction

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics publication,
Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2010

-
11 Edition, registered nurses (RNs) establish the
largest healthcare occupa
tion, with 2.6 million jobs. This nursing research guide will assist
students and casual learners in accessing information that will help them gain a better
understanding of the health sci
ences and research
nursing curriculum

for
undergraduate students
.

Target Audience

There are many students currently attending

local community
colleges

and universities
in my area
with an emphasis in

a
career

as a health
professional. The nursing f
i
led has
become very competitive and
students such as my sister and her

friends are required to

obtain

the
grades needed to apply for the nursing program
.

S
tudents are required to
pass all core classes with a passing grade and no negative marks on their academic
record.
In order to assist

the

undergraduate nursing audience I

have decided to focus
on
finding and
listing resources that can assist them in a

completing

a
successful

educational experience and gain skills for information retrieval
.

I
focused

on only listing
resources that were available to the

English speaking
students
and were published no more than ten years in dictionaries, encyclopedias, and books.
Bibliographies did not have a strict publishing criteria. Resources that could be
accessed online and in print from more than one library were selected to assi
st students
in more than one geographical area.

Search Aids

These are terms that can be used to search through the online library catalo
g and
locate resources that can help with the nursing curriculum.

Conclusion

Nursing undergraduate students can accesses and locate the resources lis
ted in
this
pathfinder with ease
.

Key terms and subject headings we
re listed to help users

begin a search on any library catalog or database.

Call numbers were listed in every
subject field that could help users locate books in print at their local or academic
librar
y. Electronic and print

books listed

in the pathfinder are labeled allowing users to
quickly see where each book can be located. Nursing journals, magazines, and
databases were
listed with

links to allow easy access on issues that matter to health
profess
ionals.

A key point that was mentioned to me by a
undergraduate nurse

is that testing
resources are important to help pre
pare them for the TEAS exam
. Nursing organizations
can help f
uture nurses in pointing out current changes in nursing requirements,

recommended health articles, and most importantly chat with professional nurses that
can answer

questions though the use of a forum or

blog.

Hopefully the i
nformation
and resources
listed
on this pathfinder can

help
facilitate retrieval

for
undergrad
uate

nurses that

are interes
ted in

lea
rning

with the use
of videos
, charts, and images.
