What is Routing Protocol
We know
Routers
learn routes by
static routes or dynamic routes
. In the
learning dynamic routes, routing protocols forward the routing information
from one router to another.
If routing protocols are not enable on routers, Dynamic routes can not be
propagated into the routing table. Routing Protocols don’t only exchange
routing information but also responsible for choosing best path, if multiple

path exist to reach the destination. It maintains routing table if new route
added or if any route removed or deleted. Dynamic routing protocols learn
routes from its neighbor router through a learning process.
Differences among all routing protocols
Different Routing Protocols have different way to perform its job. It can be
distinguished by the following factor. Every Routing protocols have some
advantage and disadvantage.
How information is share.
How best path is calculated.
Priority one routing protocol over another routing protocol
Propagation time or convergence time
Overhead of Routing protocol.
Number of maximum path for load balancing
In the simple English Routing protocols have its own strategy of sharing
information, calculation of best path, its priority to other routing protocol, its
working Area, etc.
Categories of Routing Protocols:
Routing Protocols can be defined under three categories.
Distance Vector Protocol
Link State Protocol and
Hybrid Protocol
Example of Routing Protocols:
RIP
( Rip Information Protocol)

OSPF
(Open Shortest Path first)
IS-IS
(integrated System – Integrated System)
BGP
(Border Gateway Protocol)
You should also know:
The component that is used to calculate the best path is known as
metric
.
Priority of Routing protocols are defined by
Administrative Distance.
Some routing protocols works within
Autonomous System
(AS) and some
works across the Autonomous system.
